Online Professional Tax Prep… Is it time, yet?
In the upcoming July issue of The CPA Technology Advisor, I’ve written a column that discusses why few tax and accounting professionals are using an online tax preparation system for their client returns. Considering how popular online tax prep is for do-it-yourselfers, I think it’s a curious situation. Some might blame it on the old...…

New Tax Vendor for the Professional Market? No.
A few weeks ago, I posted an article here about the possibility of a new professional tax prep vendor coming to the market (www.cpatechviews.com/2009/04/is-a-new-tax-vendor-coming-to-town). That was after I discovered that CLI, Inc., a long-time vendor of practice management systems for accounting firms, had become the U.S. distributor of the APS suite of professional products. The...…

Is a new tax vendor coming to town?
A couple of weeks ago, I received a press release from Commercial Logic, Inc., a company that’s been around the accounting space since 1981, mostly offering practice management systems and such. The gist of the announcement is that they’ve partnered with Advanced Professional Solutions (APS), which apparently has had a strong user base in the...…

Better Hardware Can Increase Productivity
From the April/May 2009 Issue Much of the buzz of the past few years has been over the continuing paperless practice movement and the phenomenon of “cloud computing.” Pretty much everyone knows the meaning of paperless; it’s basically self-explanatory. The term cloud computing, on the other hand, may seem somewhat mysterious. This article isn’t a...…

A Technology Curmudgeon’s Perspective On Innovation
From April 2008: I like to think that I am cautiously skeptical — I want to see how something will fit into an existing workflow or, if it requires changing the processes, how much pain it will cause during this transition.
