Social Security Payment Change Will Impact 3.6 Million Beneficiaries

In a notice, the Social Security Administration recently indicated it was making a switch in the financial agent that administers the agency’s Direct Express cards.

Executive Summary:

The Social Security Administration has announced an administrative transition that will shift its prepaid debit card operations to a new financial manager:

  • The Primary Change: The agency is switching the financial agent managing its Direct Express program from Comerica Bank to Fifth Third Bank following a merger between the two institutions.
  • Impacted Beneficiaries: This transition impacts roughly 3.6 million people who receive benefits via the prepaid Direct Express Debit Mastercard. Those utilizing direct deposit are unaffected.
  • Rollout Timeline: New enrollees are automatically assigned Fifth Third Bank cards, while existing cardholders will receive replacements over the coming months.
  • Action Required: Recipients must continue using their current Comerica cards until notified. They will activate the new cards through an updated mobile app.

Millions of Social Security recipients will soon see a significant change in their payments.

In a notice, the Social Security Administration recently indicated it was making a switch in the financial agent that administers the agency’s Direct Express cards.

Previously, The Motley Fool reported, Comerica Bank administered the program. Now, it will be handled by Fifth Third Bank, which merged with Comerica earlier this year.

The change won’t affect beneficiaries who have their payments deposited directly into their bank accounts. It will impact those who use the prepaid Direct Express Debit Mastercard—some 3.6 million people.

The changeover started the month.

New Direct Express card enrollees will automatically receive the First Third Bank cards. Existing account holders will receive their new cards later this year or early next year.

Beneficiaries should continue to use their existing Comerica cards until they receive the new ones. Recipients will be notified before the cards are sent.

Comerica cardholders will use the pre-existing app, Social Security said. Fifth Third Bank cardholders will also have access to the new Direct Express mobile app. The app will be used to activate the new card.

The cards can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted.

I have been 100%disabled since 2007. My first question is: how do I get increased benefits as my health has seriously deteriorated since. My second question is: at what age do I begin receiving the spending allowance?

They need to leave the social security system alone and out what part of government is dipping in to it.what alot of people need more to cover bills with a bigger increase 2.8 Medicare is 200.00 a month and it hardly covers the bills families have to pay and Medicare pays insurance for the advantage plans and if they think ok then they will pay

Where is our Social Security going? We have paid in and it is about to run out of money. How can that be? Why are so many people drawing Social Security and didn’t pay in and came from a different country? I can understand that some people need help but I am a single parent and have been for many years. Someone that pays when they take a notion to and it doesn’t even put a dent in what you have to pay for raising 4 KIDS is not right for the other parent. It is so hard to get on Food Stamps,HOUSING,, Utilities, and when you don’t have kids to claim, you are single and to claim single you get so much less. At one time I was getting like either 10 or 11 Dollars a month. Not that I don’t appreciate things that are done for me but that is ridiculous when that doesn’t even back then cover much of anything. I am sorry but I think that foreigners and ex-spouses didnt get extra that would help the situation of the money distribution.

Please do not privatize social security

Tina M GonyawJune 29 2026 at 1:51 am

I don't believe that you should privatize social security. Why would anyone want that; oh some rich person that doesn't care about the less fortunate/ poor people. A lot of people depend on SS to make ends meet. Although, most still struggle to do so. Sorry, if I sound rude; but no one that has seems to care about us have nots. Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
