The U.S. unemployment rate has remained steady through May, but some states have seen higher adjustments in weekly claims.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday a 139,000 nonfarm payroll increase in May. However, the unemployment rate did not change and remains at 4.2%.

Household survey data suggests the number of unemployed people slightly increased over May to 7.2 million. The number of people who have been jobless for less than two weeks increased by 264,000 to 2.5 million.
WalletHub calculated which states unemployment claims are increasing or staying the same.
According to the website, unemployment claims in 20 states, including Iowa, South Dakota, and Montana, were better last week than the same week last year.
But these states, including the District of Columbia, are where unemployment is increasing the most:
- Kentucky
- District of Columbia
- North Dakota
- Minnesota
- Tennessee
- Kansas
- Illinois
- Oregon
- New Mexico
- Nevada
- Ohio
- California
- Mississippi
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- Washington
- Wyoming
- New Jersey
- Missouri
- New York
