Polls Point to a Close Call on Florida Property Tax Amendment

Among the limited polling available, only one survey has shown the 60% support needed to pass.

It’s unclear whether a proposed constitutional amendment that could bring tax savings to homeowners will get the votes needed to pass on Nov. 3.

Polling varies on Florida’s Amendment 3, which would raise the homestead exemption for all non-school property taxes to $250,000 by 2028.

But most show the ballot measure falling short of the 60% support needed to pass, with many voters still undecided. Just one poll puts Amendment 3 above the 60% threshold.

If they break toward “yes,” they could push the proposal over the top.

Groups like the Florida League of Cities and the Florida Sheriffs Association have raised concerns that the proposal would strain local budgets and result in cuts to services. Some have also sounded alarms that renters could end up paying more.

Homestead exemptions reward Floridians who live in the property they own by cutting the amount of taxes they owe. The current homestead exemption is for $50,000 of the assessed value of a home.

The amendment would also reduce how much the assessed value of non-homestead properties can increase each year, from 10% to 5%.

Polling on Amendment 3 is limited, and election results may differ significantly from what polls show.
