Gusto announced on April 8 the launch of payroll inside Slack and Anthropic’s Claude AI, bringing a compliance-heavy function into the same environments where teams are already collaborating.
The company announced a similar feature with OpenAI’s ChatGPT earlier this year.
According to Chris Cosgrove, chief product officer at Gusto, eligible customers can now run payroll directly inside Claude or Slack. No menus to navigate, and no separate login. The work happens right in the conversation, he says.
“Small business owners are turning to AI to help run their businesses. In a recent Gusto Insights report, 62% of small business owners said AI will also help level the playing field with larger competitors. And four out of five small businesses using AI have seen productivity increase by 20% or more,” Cosgrove wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. “Gusto’s goal is to show up where small businesses are already working, not as another tab to keep open, but as a partner that’s available during moments that matter.”

Gusto payroll and people data is now available wherever small business owners are already working. No exports, no tab-switching, no spreadsheet wrangling, he wrote.
Just ask in plain English:
- “What drove my payroll increase last pay period?”
- “How much have we spent on overtime this quarter?”
- “How many active employees do we have today, and how has that changed over the last three months?”
“Fast answers pulled directly from your Gusto account, all without ever leaving the tool they’re already in,” Cosgrove said.
