Oct. 28 — Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman announced that federal employees with existing state tax payment plans can defer their payments until after the government reopens.
Lierman said the move is intended to ease the financial strain on federal workers who have gone weeks without pay as the budget impasse in Washington drags on.
“We want to make sure that you’re able to take care of your family first,” Lierman said on social media Monday. “That’s why we are delaying payments on all payment plans until 60 days after the shutdown ends. This is just one of the many ways we’re trying to support our federal workers through these tough times.”
Federal workers approved for the program will have their tax payments postponed for the duration of the shutdown and up to two months afterward. Those seeking to participate can email GovShutdownRelief@marylandtaxes.gov for assistance.

Maryland Offers $700 Loans to Impacted Federal Workers
Maryland is home to one of the largest concentrations of federal employees in the country—about 230,000 workers—and the state has been hit hard by the ongoing shutdown. Since the government closure began Oct. 1, many federal employees have been furloughed or required to work without pay. Some local businesses and restaurants have stepped in to offer discounts and free meals to help those affected.
The shutdown, which began after the Senate failed to reach an agreement to fund government operations for fiscal year 2026, is now the second longest in U.S. history. The ripple effects are extending beyond the federal workforce, with national programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, facing disruptions.
Lierman said her office will continue to explore ways to support Marylanders affected by the shutdown.
