San Francisco-based fintech Mercury has launched Mercury Books, double-entry accounting software built directly into its core digital banking platform.

Mercury Books uses artificial intelligence to categorize and reconcile banking, card, invoicing, and bill pay activity the moment it happens, giving founders a real-time view of their business with no imports, exports, or manual entry required, the company says.

“In my last business, I received a spreadsheet for my books 15 days after the month closed. It used to drive me crazy trying to figure out why some cost was suddenly up. Mercury Books helps you categorize in real time and understand how each cost line item tracks to each transaction in your bank and card account,” Immad Akhund, co-founder and CEO of Mercury, said in a statement on Sept. 16.

Mercury says that Mercury Books treats a business’s banking data and its books as one dataset, not two systems a person has to keep in sync. It pulls in activity from Mercury banking, cards, invoicing, and bill pay and automatically categorizes and reconciles it all as customers build their business.

Customers can also connect to thousands of external platforms like Stripe, Gusto, and PayPal for their full financial picture. Everything is categorized and reconciled using full double-entry accounting, supporting both accrual and cash basis, Mercury says.

According to Mercury, customers using Mercury Books can:

  • Run real accounting, not a summary: Mercury Books is full double-entry accounting, with accrual and cash basis reporting built to the standard a bookkeeper or accountant expects. No other accounting software needed.
  • Ask Mercury’s AI agent about your books: Mercury Books works with Command, Mercury’s built-in AI agent. Customers can ask questions about their finances or take actions like recategorizing transactions in bulk, writing journal entries, or updating their chart of accounts using natural language, with every action requiring confirmation before it’s applied.
  • Skip the catch-up with books that never fall behind: Every transaction from Mercury accounts, cards, invoices, and bill pay is categorized and reconciled the moment it lands, so the financial picture is current without manual entry or waiting for month-end. No imports, no exports, and no re-entering data by hand.
  • Connect the rest of your stack: Bring in activity from Stripe, Gusto, PayPal, or thousands of external banks and credit cards, and it’s categorized and reconciled alongside everything else in Mercury.
  • Hand off to your accountant with confidence: Invite your accountant into your books with unlimited advisor seats at no additional cost or get matched with one of Mercury’s accounting partners. Every categorized transaction traces back to the underlying activity so bookkeepers and accountants can verify the numbers instead of reconstructing them.

Mercury Books is available to all Mercury business customers at no cost through the end of 2026, then $35 per month. More information can be found here.
