The National Association of Tax Professionals has launched two individual tax credentials through the NATP Center for Professional Excellence: Accredited Individual Tax Professional and Advanced Accredited Individual Tax Professional.
The credentials are available nationally to tax professionals who prepare Form 1040 returns and want formal recognition of their knowledge and technical competence in federal individual income taxation, the association said on Aug. 13.
NATP members aren’t required to pursue the credentials.
The AITP credential recognizes foundational competence in preparing federal individual tax returns, while the AAITP credential recognizes advanced technical competence in applying federal individual tax law across more complex individual tax scenarios.
“Individual tax preparation is at the core of the work many tax professionals do every day,” NATP CEO Scott Artman, CPA, CGMA, said in a statement. “These credentials give preparers a meaningful way to demonstrate their competence, strengthen their credibility, and show a continued commitment to professional excellence.”
Tax professionals can earn an NATP credential by demonstrating their knowledge through the credential exam. Optional, self-paced study modules are available for professionals who want to build or strengthen their knowledge in the competency areas covered by the credentials, the NATP said.
The launch of the individual tax credentials follows the introduction of the NATP’s representation credentials earlier this year and signifies the next phase of the organization’s broader credentialing framework through the Center for Professional Excellence.
