WASHINGTON — The deadline for filing 2024 income tax returns is looming for one group of U.S. taxpayers.

For most of us, the deadline for filing 2024 income tax returns was April 15. But for U.S. citizens and resident aliens now living or working abroad, including those with dual citizenship, the deadline for filing returns and paying any taxes owed is June 16, 2025.

The June 16 deadline represents an automatic two-month extension from the regular April 15 tax filing deadline that overseas taxpayers receive, the Internal Revenue Service said. However, interest will still apply to any 2024 tax payments received after the original April 15, 2025, due date.

To qualify for this automatic extension to June 16, a taxpayer had to be a U.S. citizen or resident alien who on the regular April 15 due date was living outside the United States and Puerto Rico with their main place of business or post of duty also outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, or was in military or naval service on duty outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Taxpayers who cannot meet the June 16 deadline can request a further extension to October 15. That grants more time to file, but it will not extend the time to pay taxes owed, the IRS said.

This additional extension request can be made electronically, by mailing Form 4868 to the IRS, or in some cases automatically when paying taxes electronically.

Special extended deadlines are available for U.S. military personnel serving in combat zones, who can receive an additional extension of at least 180 days to file and pay taxes. Their spouses generally receive the same extensions. Taxpayers affected by recent terrorist attacks in Israel also have until September 30, 2025, to file and pay.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that while living abroad can make them eligible for special tax benefits like the foreign earned income exclusion and foreign tax credit, these benefits are only available by filing a U.S. tax return. More details are available in IRS Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
