IRS Says Average Tax Refund Up Nearly 4% From Last Year

More than 61.5 million Americans have received their annual tax refunds from the IRS, with the average filers getting back about 4% more than they did last year.

More than 61.5 million Americans have received their annual tax refunds from the IRS, with the average filers getting back about 4% more than they did last year.

Through March 28—the latest date currently available—the IRS has issued 61,577,000 refunds, 1.2% more than the 60,858,000 that had been issued by March 29 of last year.

In total, the agency has issued nearly $195.2 billion in refunds, up 5.1% from the $185.6 billion issued around that time in 2024.

The average refund amount through March 28 was $3,170, 3.9% higher than the average refund of $3,050 at that time last year.

The IRS received 89,550,000 tax returns as of the end of March, down -0.8 from 90,315,000 as of the end of March 2024.
