PERSPECTIVES

What do you feel is the most important issue facing the accounting profession today?

Advancements in technology continue to transform the profession, making it both easier and more efficient to perform standard processes. However, with fewer people entering the profession, it’s important to promote the message that technology is not meant as a replacement for people and the uniquely human skills we bring to our clients and organizations. Actively embracing technology won’t make us obsolete. Instead, it will allow our professionals more time and bandwidth to add value and pursue more interesting work. As our profession embraces technology, I believe we’ll have a compelling message to new recruits about a truly rewarding experience in the profession.

What one thing would you recommend accountants do to prepare for the future?

Develop strong technology and transformation skills that will allow them additional opportunities to serve as consultants and strategic partners for their clients and their organizations.

What one skill or experience would you recommend that young women getting started in the accounting profession master?

Be okay with taking risks, not knowing the outcome. When in this situation, I consciously choose to give myself grace and room to breathe, thereby creating opportunities for me to learn and grow. By learning to be comfortable with not knowing everything before we try something new, we build confidence.  And if we are truly progressing in our careers, being uncomfortable doesn’t end –it’s a sign that we are taking bigger risks.  And in those bigger risks, we’re finding greater ways to make an impact and serve the profession.
