Top Tech Entry Jobs are Data Analysts and Software Engineers

Skillenai, a labor market data platform, analyzed 20,867 U.S. individual-contributor tech job postings ingested from March 10 to May 31, 2026, to identify which roles are most open to entry-level and junior candidates.

The data shows that two roles stand out as tech’s clearest career-entry doors: Data Analyst and Software Engineer. Data Analyst had the highest entry and junior share at 21.8%, while Software Engineer followed at 14.3%. Other roles, including ML Engineer, Platform Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, Backend Engineer, and Data Engineer, showed much lower entry-level shares, suggesting they are more often filled by candidates with prior experience.

The finding adds role-level detail to a broader debate about whether the tech labor market is improving for early-career workers. Aggregate hiring numbers may point to a more open market, but Skillenai’s analysis suggests the opening is not evenly spread across tech roles.

Jared Rand, founder of Skillenai, says the data shows that tech careers still have entry points, but they are concentrated in specific roles.

“The mistake is treating tech as one hiring market,” Rand says. “For a new grad, Software Engineer and Data Analyst are real entry doors. Platform Engineer, SRE, Backend Engineer, and Machine Learning Engineer are more often lateral moves. They usually want evidence that you have already worked inside a production environment.”

That distinction matters because many early-career candidates aim directly at specialized titles that look more advanced, more AI-related, or more aligned with long-term career goals. The data suggests those roles may be harder places to begin.

Software Engineer remains the biggest technical entry path because of its volume. While Data Analyst had the highest entry share, Software Engineer had 6,681 postings in the dataset, far more than any other role. That means a Software Engineer still produces the largest number of entry-level opportunities.
