May 14—A Vancouver-area tax preparation group has acquired a national accounting firm, bucking the trend of large private equity firms buying small, independent accounting firms to merge them into single large entities.
Lewis Group CPAs, 600 N.E. 99th St., announced Wednesday that it acquired Atlas Accounting Group, a national practice focused on serving trades businesses, in April.
“Atlas spent years building a practice that actually speaks contractor, including billing cycles, materials, equipment, multi-state crews,” Chris Lewis, founder of Lewis Group CPAs, said in Wednesday’s press release.
Lewis said the piece Atlas didn’t handle was taxes.
“Combining the two firms means a contractor working with us now gets specialty-trades bookkeeping from the people who’ve been doing it well, plus a CPA team that knows exactly what to do with those books at filing time,” Lewis said.
Launched in 1994 as Amspacher & Lewis, P.C., Lewis Group now serves businesses and high net-worth individuals throughout the Pacific Northwest. There are 24 employees between Atlas and Lewis Group.
Washington-founded Atlas serves specialty firms like contractors, HVAC companies, electricians, plumbers and solar businesses nationwide. The firm operates remotely with employees and clients across the country.
Day-to-day services for Atlas customers will remain the same, according to Wednesday’s press release. The Atlas team and process will stay in place, and both companies will continue operating under their existing brands into the foreseeable future, the press release said.
