A recent report from U.S. Senate Democrats is warning Americans that changes to the Social Security Administration are making it “harder for Americans to get their benefits.”
“Despite his campaign promises to ‘not touch’ Social Security, Donald Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the Social Security Administration (SSA), jeopardizing Americans’ access to their hard-earned benefits,” the new Social Security War Room report from Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) office said.
NJ.com reached out to the Social Security Administration for a quote responding to the Senate Democrats’ report but did not receive a response by publication time.

Despite Senate Democrats’ references to “disastrous cuts” in the report, there are actually no benefit cuts taking effect just yet.
However, Senate Democrats have argued that staffing reductions and operational changes at Social Security offices are the same as cuts if beneficiaries can’t reach the agency or solve their payment issues in a timely manner.

The Social Security Administration, on the other hand, has touted its “significant progress,” particularly on its “digital-first” platform that will serve its beneficiaries.
Those improvements include 65% more calls answered in fiscal year 2025 compared to 2024, a 33% reduction in backlog of disability claims and the completion of $17 billion in Social Security Fairness Act payments five months ahead of schedule, according to the agency.

“The American people are experiencing a Social Security Administration that has been transformed through digital innovation and strategic process engineering to deliver best-in-class service,” Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano said at the time.
In addition to the reductions in call volume and claim backlogs, the agency now provides Americans with 24/7 access to their personal my Social Security accounts after previously having the website down 29 hours per week, according to the Social Security Administration.
