American Express and Conferma Expand Virtual Payments with Digital Wallet-Enabled Spend Solution

The solution can support travel spend across the workforce, from frequent business travelers to occasional travelers.

Isaac M. O'Bannon

American Express and Conferma have expanded their long-standing partnership to help organizations better manage eligible on-the-go spend, including meals, retail purchases, rideshare and other eligible charges incurred during business travel. A fast-growing commercial payment method, virtual cards offer greater control through adjustable spending limits and added security through unique digital card numbers.

The solution builds on American Express’ Business Travel Account with Virtual Payments (BTA), a centrally billed account that supports eligible business travel expenses with virtual cards. While BTA’s central billing capabilities already give companies greater control over higher-cost travel expenses such as airfare and hotels, this collaboration enables travelers to extend their use of Amex Virtual Cards to eligible point-of-purchase expenses incurred during a trip.

Through the Conferma mobile app, American Express BTA customers can now create and manage Amex Virtual Cards for approved travel expenses and send them to a digital wallet for contactless and online payments.

Greater control, less complexity

Designed for today’s workforce, virtual cards can reduce manual processes associated with expense reporting, as well as reliance on cash and physical cards, by providing a digital-first alternative.

Through Conferma’s virtual card solution, American Express BTA customers can benefit from:

  • Enhanced spending controls: Custom spending amounts, time limits and multi-level approval workflows reduce the risk of misuse and support policy compliance.
  • Simplified expense management: Provisioning cards to digital wallet gives travelers a simple, familiar way to pay, helping to reduce out-of-pocket spend and minimize reimbursement burden.
  • Reduced manual admin: Enhanced data through BTA statements, customizable reporting and integrated digital receipt capture in the Conferma mobile app simplify reconciliation and improve spend visibility.

Built for modern ways of working

Travelers often need to pay for additional approved expenses during their journey, creating administrative complexity for both travelers and finance teams.

By using American Express Virtual Cards with the Conferma mobile app, American Express BTA customers can extend controlled spending power to any employee, contractor or other authorized user while maintaining visibility, compliance and spend control.

The solution can support travel spend across the workforce, from frequent business travelers to occasional travelers, employees without a corporate card, recruitment programs, contractors and intern programs.

Supporting these use cases with virtual cards helps organizations improve visibility and control while reducing administrative effort.

Proven collaboration

The launch builds on more than 10 years of collaboration between American Express and Conferma, combining global scale with established virtual card technology. The solution is currently available to US-based American Express BTA customers, with several organizations already live.

Widad Choui, SVP, Corporate and B2B Solutions at American Express, said: “Businesses want simpler ways to manage spending while maintaining control and visibility. Our continued partnership with Conferma complements the central billing capabilities of BTA with virtual cards for on-the-go travel expenses, making it easier for businesses to manage spending while making it more convenient for travelers.”

“While travel bookings have become increasingly digitized, managing on-trip spend often remains a challenge. Together with American Express, we’re helping organizations bridge that gap by enabling Amex Virtual Cards to be managed through the Conferma mobile app and provisioned to digital wallets, combining a seamless payment experience for users with greater visibility and control for finance teams,” added Sonya Geelon, Chief Commercial Officer at Conferma.
