A select group of people—very young people—will be getting a new type of Social Security card this year.
In recognition of America’s 250th birthday on July 4, the Social Security Administration is providing a special type of commemorative card for children born in the U.S. between July 2 and Dec. 31, 2026.
The new “Freedom 250” cards are the first commemorative cards offered by the agency.
“Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement.
The cards function the same way as a traditional one but feature the official “Freedom 250” logo in black ink.
Not every child born during the specific time period will receive the special card. They will only be issued for those who utilize the Enumeration at Birth, or EAB, program, which allows parents at hospitals, birthing centers or those using licensed midwives to request a Social Security number during the birth registration process.
Any cards issued outside the July 2-Dec. 31 timeframe—including replacement and duplicate cards—will not carry the commemorative design regardless of the cardholder’s birth date, the agency said.
SSA has issued Social Security numbers to newborns through the EAB program since 1987 via a partnership with hospitals and state vital records offices across the country.
