CHICAGO – Accounting, tax, financial, and insurance professionals are invited to attend a free continuing education event hosted by the 831(b) Institute on July 21 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago.
The event follows the Institute’s recent accreditation through the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and the North American Securities Administrators Association, allowing the organization to offer continuing education credits through its educational programming.
Led by 831(b) Institute Advisor and Tax Attorney Peter Dawson, the session, “Tax Deferred Risk Mitigation for Business: Understanding the 831(b) Tax Code,” will examine how businesses can utilize 831(b) micro-captives as an alternative risk financing solution for underinsured and uninsured risks. Attendees will earn one continuing education credit while exploring topics including tax considerations, accounting implications, qualifying risks, investment guidelines, and the role of reinsurance.

“There is a great deal of misinformation surrounding 831(b) micro-captives,” Dawson said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide practical, compliance-focused education that helps trusted advisors understand how these structures can function as legitimate risk-management tools when properly implemented.”
Dawson brings decades of experience advising business owners and structuring complex financial solutions, making him a highly sought-after voice on risk management and 831(b) planning.
Throughout his career, he has helped clients implement strategies focused on asset protection, wealth preservation, and tax efficiency. His real-world approach allows him to translate complex concepts into clear, actionable insights, making him an especially effective and engaging presenter for professionals seeking to better understand 831(b) micro-captives.
“As businesses continue to navigate economic uncertainty and a challenging insurance market, professionals are looking for credible educational resources they can trust,” Dustin Carlson, president of the 831(b) Institute, said in a statement. “This event provides an opportunity for professionals to earn CE credits while gaining practical knowledge about an area that is often misunderstood.”
The Chicago event is part of a nationwide education initiative supported by SRA 831(b) Admin. Additional CE events are planned in Dallas, Atlanta, and Las Vegas.
