Restaurant Accountants: Lunch is Back, and It’s Big Business

Restaurants are seeing increased daytime traffic. What was once a slow part of the day is quickly becoming a revenue opportunity again.

For the first time in years, lunch traffic is making a real comeback.

As more companies require employees to return to the office — whether full-time or hybrid — restaurants are seeing increased daytime traffic. What was once a slow part of the day is quickly becoming a revenue opportunity again.

Remote work dramatically changed restaurant traffic patterns. Nowadays, local employers are recognizing the value of in-person collaboration, which can mean a stronger workplace culture.

Employees need places to meet, dine, conduct interviews, network, and entertain clients.  Getting out of the office is a welcome change of pace and may lead to fresh thinking.

One restaurant I worked with created simple gift baskets featuring mini loaves of their signature bread, menus, business cards, and a handwritten note from the owner. Staff personally visited nearby businesses, introduced themselves face-to-face, and invited companies in for lunch meetings.

The response was immediate. Guest counts increased within days. Business diners want: fast service, streamlined menus and reasonable pricing (unless they want to impress the client). Networking events and team meetings are returning as well.

A company may require a private meeting space and going to a restaurant addresses that need. Breakfast meetings, working lunches, team gatherings, and client presentations can all take place in a local restaurant.

Then there’s the happy hour.

Since many employees are still working hybrid schedules and leaving offices earlier than they once did. Businesses  should consider shifting happy hour casual events to earlier in the day so all can attend.  During the workday, non-alcoholic cocktails, shareable food, and social experiences may resonate more with today’s professionals.

Lunch is back. Now is the time to take advantage of it.
