Five Massachusetts residents have been indicted on money laundering and fraud charges in connection with a tax scheme based in Chelsea.
A Suffolk County grand jury returned indictments earlier this month against Danny Oviedo, a 37-year-old Lynn resident; Mirian Pineda, a 58-year-old Revere woman; Estefany Oviedo, a 34-year-old Lynn resident; Antonio Pires, a 59-year-old Wilmington resident; and Carlos Oviedo Regalado, a 39-year-old Revere resident, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Danny Oviedo, a tax preparer in Chelsea, carried out a scheme from 2017 to 2021 by filing state tax returns with fabricated deductions on behalf of clients, according to prosecutors.
Oviedo stole client identities to file more than 140 fraudulent income tax returns without their knowledge, prosecutors said.
Refund checks were made payable to aliases and mailed to addresses linked to Oviedo and his family, then deposited into his personal bank accounts. Those payments totaled more than $222,000.
Pineda, the president of the company and Oviedo’s mother, used deposits to support a mortgage application while failing to report nearly $400,000 in income on 2021 and 2022 corporate tax filings, according to officials.
Oviedo’s wife, Estefany Oviedo, opened bank accounts that received most of the fraudulent refund checks, totaling nearly $220,000.
Estefany Oviedo and Pires used those refund proceeds to purchase a home on Harrington Avenue in Revere, prosecutors said.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden credited the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Bureau and Audit Bureau for uncovering the scheme.
“This was an audacious, coordinated effort by a group of preparers to line their own pockets while duping the clients who trusted them with their tax returns,” Hayden said in a statement.
