New charges have been lodged against a St. Clair County tax return preparer who is accused of making false statements on tax return forms to defraud the federal government.

Dormeshia A. Haire, 38, of St. Charles, Missouri, worked in St. Clair County at the time of the alleged crimes, according to a news release Tuesday from the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of Illinois.

A nine-count superseding indictment charges Haire with three counts of filing false tax returns, three counts of wire fraud, and three counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns. The indictment was filed March 17 in federal court in East St. Louis.

Haire was originally charged in April 2024 on allegations she underreported her personal employment income in her tax returns for 2019, 2020 and 2021.

“The superseding indictment alleges Haire also committed wire fraud and submitted false information to the Government by reporting fraudulent business expenses on behalf of her tax clients,” the news release states.

Court records do not list an attorney for Haire.

The indictment alleges that in March 2021, she filed a tax return with the IRS on her own behalf stating her gross receipts were about $23,834 for tax year 2020. The indictment alleges her gross receipts were actually about $192,200, including tax preparation fees and commission fees from the sale of identity theft monitoring systems.

For the 2021 tax year, the indictment alleges Haire reported gross receipts of $50,323, but the government estimated she billed customers $323,396.

If convicted, Haire faces up to 20 years in prison, according to the news release.

U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft said in a statement, “The American tax system depends on everyone doing their part to follow the law. Cheating the tax system is no victimless crime because honest taxpayers are left to pay the price alone.”
