Taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension to file their 2024 federal income tax returns earlier this year still have to get their paperwork in by Wednesday, notwithstanding the federal government shutdown.
According to the IRS, the Oct. 15 extended tax filing deadline remains in effect even though nearly half the workforce of the federal tax collection agency recently was furloughed without pay due to the shutdown.

That means taxpayers needing IRS assistance to complete their returns may be out of luck. Tax paperwork is also likely to be processed more slowly, especially if it’s submitted on paper rather than electronically.
The federal government shut down Oct. 1 because the Republican-controlled Congress failed to approve the necessary funding measures prior to the start of the new federal budget year.
