In a move that adds to its tax practice and expands its presence in West Michigan, top 60 accounting firm Doeren Mayhew acquired Grand Rapids-based accounting firm Benoit & Associates CPAs, effective June 1.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Maurice Benoit, managing director of Benoit & Associates, joined Doeren Mayhew as a principal and has, along with his staff, relocated to the firm’s downtown Grand Rapids office.

“We think very highly of Benoit & Associates, which is why we’ve strengthened our relationship with Maurice and his team over the past several years,” Joshua Garvey, Grand Rapids’ managing principal at Doeren Mayhew, said in a statement. “With our client-centric values being exceptionally aligned, it made sense to build upon our future together as a leading firm in the region.”

For more than 30 years, Benoit & Associates has partnered with individuals and closely held businesses providing tax, accounting, business valuation, and transaction advisory services to help clients address their immediate compliance needs and achieve their long-term strategic goals.

“The Doeren Mayhew team has always impressed me with their level of expertise and high-quality solutions. Their philosophy of adding value to clients beyond daily compliance perfectly mirrors our own,” Maurice Benoit said. “Tapping into a robust infrastructure of resources driven by an exceptional team of proven professionals will allow us to deepen our client relationships, which is what we love to do. We are excited about this new chapter and the opportunities it creates for our team and our clients.”

Troy, MI-based Doeren Mayhew is among the accounting firms that have received an infusion of capital from a private equity firm, selling a stake last year to Audax Private Equity. The accounting firm said in late August 2024 that the investment will allow it to broaden its geographic footprint via continued acquisitions, as well as to enhance its service offerings, technology infrastructure, and overall employee and client experience.

Doeren Mayhew now operates in an alternative practice structure: Doeren Mayhew Assurance provides attest services as a licensed CPA firm, while Doeren Mayhew Advisors LLC provides business advisory, tax, and non-attest services. Collectively, these entities and its subsidiaries continue under the brand name Doeren Mayhew.

This was Doeren Mayhew’s first M&A deal since March when it acquired Thurman Campbell Group in Tennessee. The firm has built its presence in the West Michigan market with the acquisitions of accounting firms Beene Garter in 2022 and, most recently, BHT&D CPAs in 2024.
