More governmental employees may lose their jobs soon as President Donald Trump is moving forward with a plan to make it easier to fire federal workers and replace them with those loyal to his policies.
On Friday [April 18], the White House published a fact sheet detailing a new rule that the Office of Personnel Management proposed. The proposed rule, named Schedule Policy/Career, would reclassify certain workers as at-will employees and strip them of prior civil service regulations meaning they would be easier to fire.
“This rule empowers federal agencies to swiftly remove employees in policy-influencing roles for poor performance, misconduct, corruption, or subversion of presidential directives, without lengthy procedural hurdles,” the document states.
The change could affect about 50,000 workers or 2% of the federal workforce. Many of these employees would also be within non-partisan career roles who are not supposed to be politically loyal to any presidential administration.
The rule follows an executive order Trump signed on Jan. 20 that reinstated a former order from his first term that targeted worker protections.
That executive order, dubbed Schedule F, was signed by Trump in 2020 shortly before the presidential election whereupon he lost.
During former president Joe Biden’s first week in office he reversed Trump’s executive order.
Trump’s administration claims the change is needed to hold government employees accountable and the civil protections makes it hard to fire them for bad performance.
But based on rhetoric from Trump he wants federal employees who will be loyal to his agenda while at the same time decreasing the size of the federal government.
In a Truth Social post about the rule, Trump asserts that employees should lose their job if they refuse to implement “the policy interests of the president.”
“If these government workers refuse to advance the policy interests of the President, or are engaging in corrupt behavior, they should no longer have a job,” Trump said.
“This is common sense, and will allow the federal government to finally be “run like a business.” We must root out corruption and implement accountability in our Federal Workforce!”
