The number of tax returns that have been filed with the IRS is down 1.7% compared to this time last year, but the average tax refund amount is up 5.2%, according to the agency’s latest 2025 tax season data.
As of March 14, the IRS has received nearly 70.4 million tax returns compared to the 71.6 million returns that had been filed with the agency as of March 15, 2024.
But with the April 15 filing deadline fast approaching, the IRS is seeing an uptick in tax returns. The 70.4 million so far this tax season is up from the 61.4 million tax returns that had been sent to the IRS as of March 7. The IRS said before the 2025 tax season began on Jan. 27 that it expects more than 140 million individual tax returns to be filed ahead of the April 15 deadline.
The average tax refund amount currently sits at $3,271 compared to $3,109 this time last year. Thus far, the agency has issued a total of $163 billion in tax refunds, up 6.7% from last year.
