The average tax refund amount for tax returns filed through Feb. 28 was $3,382, about 6.3% higher than the average refund of $3,182 through Mar. 1, 2024, the IRS said last week.
The IRS data also showed that the total number of refunds and the amount refunded to taxpayers so far this tax season is ahead of last year.
The total number of refunds issued through Feb. 28 has increased 1.7% from last year to a little more than 36.9 million issued to date in the 2025 tax filing season. The total amount refunded has seen a bigger increase thus far, with $124.8 billion refunded, up 8.1% from last year.
The IRS has received 52.4 million tax returns as of Feb. 28, down 3% from the 54 million the agency received around this time last year. Of those 52.4 million tax returns received, the IRS has processed 51.8 million of them. Electronically filed returns have totaled 51.2 million as of the end of February.
