2025 Tax Refund Schedule – When Will You Get Your IRS Refund? – Updated

Still waiting on your 2025 income tax refund? This chart can help you estimate when you will receive your refund, even with the changes at the IRS.

Isaac M. O'Bannon

Updated Feb. 28, 2025.

Well, we’re one month into the 2025 IRS income tax filing season, and the daily news about government agencies cutting staff is making this one of the more turbulent seasons since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Yes, there have been some delays, but most taxpayers we’ve been in contact with have reported receiving their returns within the guidelines in schedule below, or within a week after.

If you’re wondering how long it may take to get your refund when you finally submit your income tax return, you are one of many. For almost 15 years, the question we get the most often has been: “When will I get my tax refund?” Nobody can give you an exact answer, especially this far out, we can give you a pretty good estimate based on a few factors, and the 50-year collective experience of the CPA Practice Advisor team.

Right now, you want to know: “When can I expect to get my tax refund?” – Just scroll down if you want to see the easy chart refund date estimator.

First, keep in mind that you need to wait to file until you receive all of your tax forms from your employer, as well as colleges, mortgages and other documents. If you have complex finances, got married or divorced, had a child, retired, bought or sold a house, own crypto or foreign assets, those will make things more complex. In these situations, you should definitely seek the advice of a tax professional like a CPA or EA in order to make sure you are complying with tax laws and also taking advantage of new or lesser known tax deductions and credits that could benefit you.

But most Americans have pretty simple taxes: A job or two (form W-2), maybe a side gig (forms 1099 or 1099-NEC), some child tax credits, maybe a mortgage or a few minor additions. The chart below is for you.

Short Answer: Depending on when taxpayers file their returns, they can often receive their federal tax refund payment (check or direct deposit) within 10-21 days. If the IRS starts accepting returns at the end of January, as is usual, that means that someone who is able to file right away and are a due a refund, can often see the refund as early as mid- or late February if they have it direct deposited. That’s without an expensive “tax refund loan” or other similar product.

If you have multiple forms of income or certain assets, or certain family situations, you will likely have to wait a bit longer for all of your tax documents to come in before you are able to file. In particular taxpayers might have to wait a little longer if they have:

  • The Earned Income Tax Credit,
  • Child Tax Credit,
  • And a few other credits that require confirmation.

So, here’s the chart you were looking for. If the IRS announces any changes to tax law or potential date changes, we will update this chart. And remember: This is only an estimate of when to expect your refund.

Do not take these dates as exact predictions, as all taxpayers have different tax returns, documents, incomes, and other situations. Note that the first column is when the IRS “accepts” your return, which can be 2-3 days after the day you submitted it electronically, and the IRS will notify you of the actual date on which the agency “accepted” your return (usually by text or email). Mailing in a paper return can result in 3-4 weeks’ extra delay at the beginning of the process, since the IRS will need to enter it into their computer systems manually.

If your IRS income tax refund is delayed after you’ve filed, ask your tax professional, or simply use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website to check the status of your refund. Or you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status. It’s a good idea to e-file your tax return as soon as you have all of your tax documents (like your W2, 1099s, mortgage and student loan interest, and other items) as e-filing generally ensures a faster turnaround time.

Several factors can determine when a taxpayer might receive his or her tax refund, including:

  • How early the return is filed;
  • If the taxpayer is claiming certain credits (especially EITC and CTC);
  • Whether the return is e-filed or sent by mail;
  • Whether the taxpayer has existing debts to the federal government.

Be Safe – Hire a Professional

Taxpayers who use a professional, such as a CPA or EA, can ask that professional for the estimated date of their tax refund, and they can be more confident that their taxes have been properly (and legally) filed. (And you can often save, or get a bigger refund, by using a professional.)

There are also apps for Apple, Android and other devices that help track refund status.

What If You Can’t File Your Income Taxes By April 15?

Any taxpayer who can’t file their return by April 15 for any reason (such as they don’t have all of the paperwork needed in order to file their taxes) can easily file an extension form, “Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” (Link to IRS Form 4868.) Any tax pro can help you with this, as well. This will give the taxpayer until October 15, 2025, to file the federal tax return. No reason or excuse is needed to receive this extension, and as the title states, it is automatically granted. Be sure to check the extension rules for your particular state as the extension date may differ from the date for the federal return extension.

Note that if a person will owe taxes with the tax return, it is still that taxpayer’s obligation to pay those taxes by April 15, 2025, even if an extension to file has been requested. A tax professional can assist with this payment process. Those who are due a refund generally only need to file the extension request by April 15, 2025. Any tax professional and most do-it-yourself tax programs can perform this task.

I did taxes in January still have not received them after faxed off additional documents they needed smh

isaacobannonMarch 2 2025 at 2:26 am

No. You submitted on the 27th of January. That is not possibly the date the IRS accepted your tax return. As the article states, it always takes at least a few days before they accept it, because you are using TurboTax, which is not the IRS, but a private company, to transmit your date. As the article said, you may also have complicating factors, such as EITC, Child Tax Credits, or other issues that the IRS needs to verify. The article clearly explains all of this.

MelissaMarch 2 2025 at 5:11 am

I filed my taxes n Jan 25th. I then checked to see the status and the IRS needed a 1095a. This was the first year I had to do this. So I called the IRS and the document was received on the 19th and on the 15th was processing. So what does this mean and how long do you think I'll have to wait till I get my return?? Thanks

MaryMarch 2 2025 at 5:47 am

Reginald WakefieldMarch 3 2025 at 9:32 am

Filed mines February 1st and it was accepted February 1st I even payed extra to get it quicker and still nothing it is now march 3rd

Samantha GennellMarch 3 2025 at 4:35 pm

I filed on Jan 27. Thru TurboTax, and it is now March 3 with no refund.

    isaacobannonMarch 5 2025 at 2:11 am

If you use your refund to pay for your TurboTax fees, they are loaning you that fee, along with interest, and it ends up taking longer. As the article notes: It only takes about 10 days to get a refund without a loan, but even though you didn't a loan, the IRS considers it one, since you borrowed against your refund to pay Intuit TurboTax.

Theresa R BallardMarch 4 2025 at 6:48 am

When Is my date

Anna BargherMarch 5 2025 at 4:41 am

Filed my taxes January 27th and still haven’t received anything, just says received and processing. Hasn’t changed the status.

Brenda DelgadoMarch 6 2025 at 2:27 am

Federal accepted my return on 1/27/25. I did file for the EITC, Child Tax Credits. I received notification to verify my identity to confirm I filed a return for 2024. I did verify my identity as of February 21st via the IRS website verify Identity. This is the 1st time I have had to verify my identity so I am not sure what to expect. I did read the est processing time of an additional 9 weeks after I verified my identity. I am praying it’s sooner than later. I am one of millions Americans who are living paycheck to paycheck with everything going up but your hourly rate. I get the required hold for verification of EITC credits, it would be helpful if we had a tool of our own for individual tax payers who have filed EITC returns who have to wait longer than 21 days and now even longer because of additional updates and verifications. Point is we need our own where my refund tool for tax payers who are expecting a return pending EITC credits with a processing status, pending verifications requested if needed Ect. We are pretty much in the dark unless you qualify for the 3rd party loans Ect. Ugh!! I am so over it.

Vernon AndrewsMarch 6 2025 at 6:27 pm

Filed originally on 1/27. I had to do an amended on 1/31, so I know it’ll be the 12th of No-never before I’ll get anything.

Dominique LMarch 7 2025 at 6:48 am

File my taxes, January 31 and they said they were accepted or received the same day for both federal and state. I do have the child tax credit on mine and still waiting March 7th.

Teofilo SalgadoMarch 7 2025 at 9:02 am

My Federal tax return was accepted on January 28th. 2025 and the IRS.gov/Refunds app and IRS2Go app still saying that is still being process, simple tax return,no child tax credit or earned income credit.

Rain BowensMarch 7 2025 at 11:11 am

For all of you who are waiting check your tax topic for example if it says tax topic 151 then that means you gave a debt and it was taken from your return if it says tax topic 201 that means you owe the irs each topic is different if you click on your tax topic it will give you a better idea of what's going on with your taxes also I filed January 31st received my return February 14th my status on where's my refund never moved past accepted until after I received my refund so try checking your bank account hang in there everyone I'm praying for you all

Melia O.March 7 2025 at 5:44 pm

If you try to file early in January, February or up to a certain date in March, typically you will not get your return until sometime in March due to Child Tax Credits, or other Credits you were able to claim. They will also check on any liens, backed payments etc. Some places give you money that day, but it is a loan on your taxes and that will delay your return. I hope all who wrote have received their returns, just remember next year if you try to file early in hopes you will get it within 10 days, if you have children or other legal credits they do not release your refund until March and even that date is never same. If you didn’t receive 2023 taxes I suggest to call. Hopefully that is an oversight and error on their end. Remember the IRS checks against any outstanding bills you may have that have been filed with a collection agency, they may pay your outstanding balance. So only rush next year if you are trying to get a loan on your refund that day, just know you don’t have to rush if you have kids etc bc your refund isn’t returned until March typically.

JulieMarch 8 2025 at 12:47 pm

I filed my taxes on the February 20th and I still had not gotten mine at it is the 8th of march

JulieMarch 8 2025 at 12:49 pm

I filed. In my taxes february 20th and today is march8th and no taxes

Dominique LockettMarch 8 2025 at 4:26 pm

Mary if you didn't receive your other return from previous year just go to unclaimed money website and it should be there

MistyMarch 10 2025 at 12:58 pm

How can it take only roughly 3 weeks to process full returns yet if you receive a letter to verify identity it takes 9 additional weeks? Why does that not give reason to push it thru being it tells you that it was verified upon completion?? The leg work has already been done! I'm not complaining, I am just confused on the whole point of the verification for it to take 9 additional weeks!!!

Dominique LMarch 11 2025 at 5:10 am

Second time posting here.. filed January 31st (both accepted within an couple days) and it’s now March 11th still nothing and sitting in topic 152 just saying it’s delayed.. yes have child tax credit as well. Does anyone know anything of what is going on with these delays and an actual timeline?

TenilleMarch 11 2025 at 4:41 pm

Was accepted 1/27 and Where’s My Refund hasn’t changed. Just received notice yesterday stating “We're holding your refund until we finish reviewing your tax return.” I have child tax credit as well. This is the first year this has happened. The letter says I don’t need to do anything further. Not sure what’s going on either but I really need this refund asap.

tara harrisMarch 12 2025 at 2:14 pm

I have the same question as Misty posted on March 10th@1245pm

Dom LMarch 17 2025 at 9:21 pm

I have been waiting a long time accepted and all January 31st and state with in 48 hours of that. I have been waiting since then with CTC as well.. I haven’t received a letter or anything so my fiancé recommended that I made an account with the IRS and when I did there was a note sitting there stating they’re holding my refund until I get my 2022 taxes in which I didn’t realize we never finished them a couple years ago. I finished them a turned them in the next day in person at the IRS building and the state building and they still said 6-8 weeks to wait. So maybe check yours out could be in my same situation.

PatricioMarch 19 2025 at 8:03 pm

E-filed & accepted on same day 2-28-2025. Today is 3-20-2025. No update, nothing on a transcript. I have ZERO confidence that it will work out smoothly.
