2025 Tax Refund Schedule and Calendar: When You Will Get Your Refund: Where’s My Tax Refund?

This article includes an easy reference chart that taxpayers can use to estimate how soon they may get their income tax refund.

Isaac M. O'Bannon

Updated: Feb. 12, 2025.

The income tax filing season is just starting, and many people are receiving their W2 and other tax forms. Now that taxes are back on the mind, so are tax refunds! Will President Trump’s second term, new cabinet secretaries and other things affect the taxes you’re filing now? Well, probably not this year, since tax filing season is already underway. Although it is possible that some IRS hiring issues could mildly affect refund processing times.

If you’re wondering how long it may take to get your refund when you finally submit your income tax return, you’re not alone. In fact, for almost 15 years, the question we get the most often has been: “When will I get my tax refund?” Nobody can give you an exact answer, especially this far out, but we can give you a pretty good estimate based on a few factors, and the 50-year collective experience of the CPA Practice Advisor team.

Right now, you want to know: “When can I expect to get my tax refund?” – Just scroll down if you want to see the easy chart refund date estimator.

First, keep in mind that you need to wait to file until you receive all of your tax forms from your employer, as well as colleges, mortgages and other documents. If you have complex finances, got married or divorced, had a child, retired, bought or sold a house, own crypto or foreign assets, those will make things more complex. In these situations, you should definitely seek the advice of a tax professional like a CPA or EA in order to make sure you are complying with tax laws and also taking advantage of new or lesser known tax deductions and credits that could benefit you.

But most Americans have pretty simple taxes: A job or two (form W-2), maybe a side gig (forms 1099 or 1099-NEC), some child tax credits, maybe a mortgage or a few minor additions. The chart below is for you.

w2-form-300x2001

Short Answer: Depending on when taxpayers file their returns, they can often receive their federal tax refund payment (check or direct deposit) within 10-21 days. If the IRS starts accepting returns at the end of January, as is usual, that means that someone who is able to file right away and are a due a refund, can often see the refund as early as mid- or late February if they have it direct deposited. That’s without an expensive “tax refund loan” or other similar product.

If you have multiple forms of income or certain assets, or certain family situations, you will likely have to wait a bit longer for all of your tax documents to come in before you are able to file. In particular taxpayers might have to wait a little longer if they have:

  • The Earned Income Tax Credit,
  • Child Tax Credit,
  • And a few other credits that require confirmation.

So, here’s the chart you were looking for. If the IRS announces any changes to tax law or potential date changes, we will update this chart. And remember: This is only an estimate of when to expect your refund.

Do not take these dates as exact predictions, as all taxpayers have different tax returns, documents, incomes, and other situations. Note that the first column is when the IRS “accepts” your return, which can be 2-3 days after the day you submitted it electronically, and the IRS will notify you of the actual date on which the agency “accepted” your return (usually by text or email). Mailing in a paper return can result in 3-4 weeks’ extra delay at the beginning of the process, since the IRS will need to enter it into their computer systems manually.

If your IRS income tax refund is delayed after you’ve filed, ask your tax professional, or simply use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website to check the status of your refund. Or you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status. It’s a good idea to e-file your tax return as soon as you have all of your tax documents (like your W2, 1099s, mortgage and student loan interest, and other items) as e-filing generally ensures a faster turnaround time.

Several factors can determine when a taxpayer might receive his or her tax refund, including:

  • How early the return is filed;
  • If the taxpayer is claiming certain credits (especially EITC and CTC);
  • Whether the return is e-filed or sent by mail;
  • Whether the taxpayer has existing debts to the federal government.

Be Safe – Hire a Professional

Taxpayers who use a professional, such as a CPA or EA, can ask that professional for the estimated date of their tax refund, and they can be more confident that their taxes have been properly (and legally) filed. (And you can often save, or get a bigger refund, by using a professional.)

There are also apps for Apple, Android and other devices that help track refund status.

What If You Can’t File Your Income Taxes By April 15?

Any taxpayer who can’t file their return by April 15 for any reason (such as they don’t have all of the paperwork needed in order to file their taxes) can easily file an extension form, “Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” (Link to IRS Form 4868.) Any tax pro can help you with this, as well. This will give the taxpayer until October 15, 2025, to file the federal tax return. No reason or excuse is needed to receive this extension, and as the title states, it is automatically granted. Be sure to check the extension rules for your particular state as the extension date may differ from the date for the federal return extension.

Note that if a person will owe taxes with the tax return, it is still that taxpayer’s obligation to pay those taxes by April 15, 2025, even if an extension to file has been requested. A tax professional can assist with this payment process. Those who are due a refund generally only need to file the extension request by April 15, 2025. Any tax professional and most do-it-yourself tax programs can perform this task.

JenniferJanuary 24 2025 at 5:33 pm

I did my taxes yesterday 01/23/2025 and just got email notification from TurboTax stating that my Federal return was approved/accepted on 02/24/2025 which is today... So. How does that work when the IRS doesn't start accepting until 01/27/2025?

Tara MJanuary 24 2025 at 6:12 pm

My taxes got accepted already according to Turbotax. I received an email for both my state and federal taxes saying they had been accepted.

Kristal DarnellJanuary 24 2025 at 11:54 pm

My federal was accepted January 17th 2025

Elise McGillJanuary 25 2025 at 12:19 am

It looks like the IRS is on their a game this year with my return being accepted today which was Friday January 24th. Off to a good start let's keep those vibrations rollin. #IRS

DouglasJanuary 25 2025 at 11:18 am

Just because it was approved doesn't me they are processing it. Approved just means they check your social and other info. They won't start working on your taxes until the 27th

Your grandmaJanuary 25 2025 at 11:23 am

The irs accepted it but will not process it till they open....

SKDJanuary 25 2025 at 8:44 pm

The returns were likely just accepted by the tax service that you used, but they won't go into the IRS until Monday Jan 27th 2025. And for the gentleman who asked if he could get help with his taxes, check the IRS free file section, and if you fit the income and age requirements, you can file your federal for free, and sometimes there is a charge for preparing your state return, but it's usually pretty inexpensive. Some are even free for the state too, but not all of them are. It's better than spending a couple hundred dollars, if you only have to spend around $25!

Meghan BrownJanuary 26 2025 at 7:28 am

My Taxes were accepted early this year, but it also states that they will not start being processed until January 27th.

Mrs.TJanuary 27 2025 at 9:56 pm

Everything seems to be going with ease this year upon checking of my transcripts, I got some good dates. I will keep you guys updated. I know that they initially started processing on the 27th by the way, my E.D.D is February 11th

MelanieJanuary 28 2025 at 4:29 am

After I filed my refund and it was accepted on the 17th it told me my expected day to receive my refund would be the seventh a couple days later I checked it and instead of the seventh it just says refund delivery. Does anyone know why?

ChrisJanuary 28 2025 at 9:38 am

You can prepare and file your Federal and State taxes for 100% free using Cashapp which is a product of Intuit, the same company that owns TurboTax! I have been using it for over three years now and have never had any issues with the service and they offer free Audit Support and Max Refund Guarantee!! Just thought I would put that information out there for the person who was inquiring on getting assistance with their tax preparation!! - Chris

DannyJanuary 29 2025 at 1:07 pm

IRS is playing games, they must have 1 employee doing tax refunds for the entire USA, they accepted my taxes electronically on Feb. 12, 2024 for direct deposit and I still have NOT RECEIVED MY REFUND!!!!!!! and it's almost Feb/2025 now, total nonsense. You can't talk to anyone at the IRS and if you do, they put you ON HOLD AND THE CALL DROPS AND HANGS UP, so worthless to even call, IRS is bigger crooks than anyone can imagine. I will never overpay the IRS again while I'm still working or alive, I'll file my taxes from now on and owe the IRS for not paying enough taxes and file for IRS payment forgiveness the rest of my life, I'm done overpaying for the rest of my lifetime.

Christi L ShackerfordJanuary 29 2025 at 1:20 pm

I did mine on January,27,2025 and the IRS expected and gave me a Do Date of 02/17/2025

chrisJanuary 29 2025 at 3:16 pm

I electronically filed both my state and federal taxes last night through Free Tax USA. It took 15 minutes after submission(s) and received 2 separate emails stating that my state and federal filings were accepted by the IRS. The IRS is efficient this year. I hope my refund will be in my bank account by next week.

MichelleJanuary 29 2025 at 6:26 pm

The Reason for the irs accepting returns early is they do a test batch run but was only until the 23rd so anyone after the 23rd would be accepted on the 27th

DamienneJanuary 30 2025 at 9:10 am

E-Filed my taxes thru HR Block on 1/13 and am still waiting for them to be accepted. Beginning to feel like going through "professional" services like theirs just aren't worth it if they are going to get held up not to mention it cost me over $100 to have both Federal and State done and filed.

MaleikJanuary 31 2025 at 2:20 am

I filed my taxes on Jan 21 and they got accepted on the 22nd. I've received my state taxes on the 29th but I'm still waiting for my federal taxes to be deposited.

IrmaFebruary 1 2025 at 9:21 am

IrmaFebruary 1 2025 at 9:40 am

Reann R LunaFebruary 2 2025 at 8:02 am

Well congrats to you all for getting your w-2s in early and getting your taxes filed. I received my last W-2 on the 31st of January went home I filed my taxes through IRS direct federal and state was free and within 10 minutes after submitting I received an email that my return has been accepted and that was the fastest I ever seen

PatriciaFebruary 2 2025 at 8:27 am

To Danny that has been waiting a year for return. My son was also waiting for a year. And he's military. So I got my state senator involved, and his return is in his bank account

Izzeldin MohammedFebruary 3 2025 at 4:38 pm

BrittneyFebruary 3 2025 at 11:48 pm

Mine where accepted on the 17th but nothing has changed dose anyone know why this could be

TriciaFebruary 4 2025 at 1:37 am

Okay....so why were my taxes accepted on January 16th???🤔

CindyFebruary 4 2025 at 6:14 am

I filed with H&R Block on 1/24 was accepted on 1/27! H&R Block is scam, the people they have working there upcharge and they messed our taxes up and by messing our taxes up cause they hardly speak or understand English so they get thing mos construed our taxes were rejected 2 times because Juliana in eustis fl. Store has no clue what she is doing. She claimed we had marketplace insurance and that’s not true so we were rejected cause they wanted proof, can’t give them something that not true! Than she kept getting kicked off our account for some reason while she was doing our taxes. Than she said she filed and did the advance which we have been approved for, the last 6 years at hr block in Ohio! We got denied… guess why, she didn’t file our taxes when she was kicked out the last time she said she filed, no she didn’t she went on the next day at 3:04 and tried to refile but couldn’t we got a text and than we called her boss Jeff and he fixed it but we have to go through this all the while paying $460! We will do our free through irs next year. Just a warning about my own experience with hr block in eustis Florida! Good luck everyone IRS is busy and have a lot of work ahead of them.

SerenaFebruary 4 2025 at 8:11 am

EIC and an additional EIC credits path Vt it's site clearly states March 3rd they will release taxes returns so don't get overly excited and accepted isn't the same as approved. Try going to where is my refund to track your refund on the IRS website and you can do the same with your state refund go to your state and say where is my refund and put it in and you can track your refund from there or check your transcripts

Heather HoustonFebruary 4 2025 at 12:21 pm

I done my taxes on Jan 22 they got accepted on Jan 24 . Now just waiting for them release them I always get them on Feb 13 or somewhere close to that date. H and r block has always been good to me .

Diana CervantesFebruary 4 2025 at 1:09 pm

My said the I have to wait 21 if I filled electronic but nothing and yes h&block charge alot and they sell you a insurance for alot money but they don't do nothing to help you if you have a problem with the irs

HunterFebruary 4 2025 at 3:30 pm

I filed with H&R Block, Des Moines, Iowa on the 11th and mine was accepted on the 21st also have earned income tax credit or whatever those credits are for the children is the IRS accepted but it’s been since the 11th and I still haven’t received anything yet - anybody have any opinions or answers on this?

Help deskFebruary 4 2025 at 8:58 pm

YES YOUR RETURN CAN BE EARLY accepted. THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY A GOOD THING! IT MEAN YOU HAVE BEEN PLACED IN WHATS CALLED THE TEST BATCH. The use it to test their system and to make sure things are running smoothly. But for those in the test batch it means you will more than likely have a lot of trouble getting your refund approved. Being accepted is one thing but you still have to go through processing and then get your refund approved. Look up irs test batch for more information. GOOD LUCK! YOUR GOING TO NEED IT.

Felecia Y WalkerFebruary 5 2025 at 4:42 am

What can you do if you haven't received your w2 and can't contact the company's HR department?

Donald PetersonFebruary 5 2025 at 2:11 pm

CourtneyFebruary 5 2025 at 4:58 pm

I did my taxes on the 23rd they was accepted on the 24th..the dest. Date I'd February 14th...but when I went and checked calender days it says February 7th with February 14th in ()...what does that mean

HeidiFebruary 6 2025 at 3:35 am

Mine was accepted on Jan 17th. Turbo tax says I should have it by the 8th. It's app says it's not approved so I have no clue

MsThomasFebruary 8 2025 at 12:35 am

I believe it's after February 22 dates will be available for eitc ,so yes people that don't have certain credits (eitc) for sure can receive date or refund before then

Laura HubbardFebruary 9 2025 at 2:34 pm

I fileddo H&R Block I have the unearned income tax credit and the child tax creditI got accepted early like the 12th or somethingit's been unacceptedforever now. so I'm not sure how to check my transcripts but I'm going to and I'll keep you updated. alsoalso last year they said that we weren't going to receive our taxes the people with child tax credit until like the end of February and we got ours on February 14th so I don't knowdoes anybody who has the child tax credit and who went through H&R Block and has it under an income tax credit have a date when they're deposit will show up yet

Genevieve EstradaFebruary 11 2025 at 1:39 pm
