Since the start of the 2025 tax filing season on Jan. 27, the IRS has issued 3.23 million refunds with an average refund amount of $1,928 as of Jan. 31, the agency said last week.

The average refund amount will likely change in the months leading up to the April 15 filing deadline as the IRS expects more than 140 million individual tax returns to be filed.

As of Jan. 31, the IRS has received 13,177,000 returns and processed 11,727,000 of them. Of those 13.1 million returns, 12.8 million were e-filed—8.5 million were self-prepared by taxpayers and 4.3 million were e-filed by tax practitioners.

The table below from the IRS compares totals at the end of January 2025 with early February 2024. Because many taxpayers were still waiting for important tax documents at the end of January, the IRS said it expects the tax return filing numbers will catch up in the following weeks.

[1] Total tax returns processed includes returns received in the prior or current year and processed in 2025.

[2] Total refunds issued represents refunds for returns received and processed in 2025, which reflects current year returns only. However, the number of direct deposit refunds represents refunds for both current and prior year returns processed in 2025, which makes this figure larger than the “total number of refunds” listed for the current year.
