IRS Income Tax Refund Schedule for 2025

This chart can help you estimate when you should get your 2025 income tax return, based on when you file and a few other easy factors.

Isaac M. O'Bannon

Updated: Feb. 10, 2025.

The IRS started accepting income tax returns on January 27, 2025, which means tax filing season is officially upon us. And while most people say they hate doing their taxes, most Americans look forward to getting their tax refunds.

If you’re wondering how long it may take to get your refund when you finally submit your income tax return, you are one of many. For almost 15 years, the question we get the most often has been: “When will I get my tax refund?” Nobody can give you an exact answer, especially this far out, we can give you a pretty good estimate based on a few factors, and the 50-year collective experience of the CPA Practice Advisor team.

Right now, you want to know: “When can I expect to get my tax refund?” – Just scroll down if you want to see the easy chart refund date estimator.

First, keep in mind that you need to wait to file until you receive all of your tax forms from your employer, as well as colleges, mortgages and other documents. If you have complex finances, got married or divorced, had a child, retired, bought or sold a house, own crypto or foreign assets, those will make things more complex. In these situations, you should definitely seek the advice of a tax professional like a CPA or EA in order to make sure you are complying with tax laws and also taking advantage of new or lesser known tax deductions and credits that could benefit you.

But most Americans have pretty simple taxes: A job or two (form W-2), maybe a side gig (forms 1099 or 1099-NEC), some child tax credits, maybe a mortgage or a few minor additions. The chart below is for you.

w2-form-300x2001

Short Answer: Depending on when taxpayers file their returns, they can often receive their federal tax refund payment (check or direct deposit) within 10-21 days. If the IRS starts accepting returns at the end of January, as is usual, that means that someone who is able to file right away and are a due a refund, can often see the refund as early as mid- or late February if they have it direct deposited. That’s without an expensive “tax refund loan” or other similar product.

If you have multiple forms of income or certain assets, or certain family situations, you will likely have to wait a bit longer for all of your tax documents to come in before you are able to file. In particular taxpayers might have to wait a little longer if they have:

  • The Earned Income Tax Credit,
  • Child Tax Credit,
  • And a few other credits that require confirmation.

So, here’s the chart you were looking for. If the IRS announces any changes to tax law or potential date changes, we will update this chart. And remember: This is only an estimate of when to expect your refund.

Do not take these dates as exact predictions, as all taxpayers have different tax returns, documents, incomes, and other situations. Note that the first column is when the IRS “accepts” your return, which can be 2-3 days after the day you submitted it electronically, and the IRS will notify you of the actual date on which the agency “accepted” your return (usually by text or email). Mailing in a paper return can result in 3-4 weeks’ extra delay at the beginning of the process, since the IRS will need to enter it into their computer systems manually.

If your IRS income tax refund is delayed after you’ve filed, ask your tax professional, or simply use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website to check the status of your refund. Or you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status. It’s a good idea to e-file your tax return as soon as you have all of your tax documents (like your W2, 1099s, mortgage and student loan interest, and other items) as e-filing generally ensures a faster turnaround time.

Several factors can determine when a taxpayer might receive his or her tax refund, including:

  • How early the return is filed;
  • If the taxpayer is claiming certain credits (especially EITC and CTC);
  • Whether the return is e-filed or sent by mail;
  • Whether the taxpayer has existing debts to the federal government.

Be Safe – Hire a Professional

Taxpayers who use a professional, such as a CPA or EA, can ask that professional for the estimated date of their tax refund, and they can be more confident that their taxes have been properly (and legally) filed. (And you can often save, or get a bigger refund, by using a professional.)

There are also apps for Apple, Android and other devices that help track refund status.

What If You Can’t File Your Income Taxes By April 15?

Any taxpayer who can’t file their return by April 15 for any reason (such as they don’t have all of the paperwork needed in order to file their taxes) can easily file an extension form, “Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” (Link to IRS Form 4868.) Any tax pro can help you with this, as well. This will give the taxpayer until October 15, 2025, to file the federal tax return. No reason or excuse is needed to receive this extension, and as the title states, it is automatically granted. Be sure to check the extension rules for your particular state as the extension date may differ from the date for the federal return extension.

Note that if a person will owe taxes with the tax return, it is still that taxpayer’s obligation to pay those taxes by April 15, 2025, even if an extension to file has been requested. A tax professional can assist with this payment process. Those who are due a refund generally only need to file the extension request by April 15, 2025. Any tax professional and most do-it-yourself tax programs can perform this task.

Why does it take longer for the EIC and CTC returns take longer even if I got it in on Jan 28th????????

SheltonFebruary 4 2025 at 8:23 pm

Every year, I use Turbo Tax to file my federal and state taxes. To my surprise, the IRS accepted my return on January 17th, and my refund was issued by direct deposit on February 1st.

WendyFebruary 4 2025 at 10:00 pm

We got the email stating it will be closer to March before ours too because EIC and CTC. I'm still shocked too that our 17 yr old is still in high-school and we pay all her bills but we can't get EIC for her. But I guess it's their way.

Araceli carrascoFebruary 4 2025 at 10:08 pm

I need to make my taxes from 2021can l make at this time and l don’t know if l need to file extension

ANITA TKATCHFebruary 4 2025 at 10:19 pm

Because those credits have to be manually confirmed. It's real. Humans are slower than computers only. For what it's worth I have the delay also.

Theodore KellyFebruary 4 2025 at 11:19 pm

Why are there delays for certain "forms"... sucks there not prepared!

RyleeFebruary 4 2025 at 11:57 pm

Does me claiming a dependent, someone I took care of in 2024 that is not a child, have the same delay as an ETIC? It added $500 to my return but it's different than claiming a child. So i was just curious what to expect. Cashapp claims my federal and state refunds have both already been accepted.

Nicole TapiaFebruary 5 2025 at 1:10 am

Where I have been reading when Obama was in office he created a law that does not allow anyone that claims a child dependent eCI or other types of credits that cannot be released for federal return before the 15th of February to help out with security and fraud

Reginald D BoddieFebruary 5 2025 at 7:04 am

Good Morning just wanted feedback. On this thank u

Tisia GraysonFebruary 5 2025 at 10:51 am

My return was sent in on 1/27. It has been in Received Status since 1/28. How is my refund going to deposited by 2/7, when today is 2/5?

Stacey GordonFebruary 5 2025 at 12:07 pm

I need to know how to find out about my state tax refund.. haven't been getting any for the past 15yrs

Michael S JenkinsFebruary 5 2025 at 2:29 pm

Iv used the same place for a few years. An have getting back a couple thousand. An now there saying I'll only get 40 bucks back. Ain't that some grap. No need in filling then

Lisa MartinezFebruary 5 2025 at 3:37 pm

I e-filed on Jan 23rd and it was accepted. It still says my refund is only in the received part and I should be getting my refund on the 7th and today's the 5th and I've also been reading that it could be stuck in pending status since I filed prior to the 27th I don't know what to do at this point because nobody can give me answers

P.JFebruary 6 2025 at 3:00 pm

Mine was accepted Jan 17th, but I understand they weren't starting them until the 27th. Mine is still in accepted mode but I thought it would be one of the 1st in line to be sent tomorrow, Feb 7 via direct deposit.

Christina MaderaFebruary 6 2025 at 11:28 pm

Same here but nothing yet

TabithaFebruary 7 2025 at 1:48 am

To Michael Jenkins - you have got to be doing something wrong .. ? Do you have kids to clean to ? My email is koltonmathew16@gmail.com I can definitely help you figure it out if you'd like.. To PJ- that line bar DOES NOT WORK Worth a nothing. Last year I got my money and the line was still stuck on the first part ! Never even went to the part where IRS Accepted Them. IRS Accepted mines on the 29th of January and once again my bar stuck on one . To Rylee- yes , even though you claimed an adult there still considered a "depended" so it has to go into further investigation. I am not no professional tax rep , I don't work for IRS , this is just from my personal experiences . I've been helping my friends and family claim taxes for years so I know a good bit but it's obvious that this tax bullshit is different every single year. It's always something. They quick as hell to take money from us but when it comes time to give it back it's ALWAYS SOMETHING!!

Raven MorvantFebruary 7 2025 at 2:29 am

Mine was accepted Jan 17th, but I understand they weren't starting them until the 27th. Mine is still in accepted mode but I thought it would be one of the 1st in line to be sent tomorrow, Feb 7 via direct deposit.

LufefeFebruary 7 2025 at 5:42 am

I claim my refund 16 January and it was accepted the next day 17 January i still didn't receive my refund today is 7 February

kLFebruary 7 2025 at 6:42 am

I filed 1/23 and it got accepted the next day 1/24…. But the irs says they don’t accept them until 1/27 so I’m really confused… and I file on turbo taxes so I did the request for refund 5 days early but then got an email yesterday 2/6 saying the IrS won’t be releasing until March 3rd??!!!!! I don’t have a date on the where’s my refund either it just says return received., it hasn’t been approved yet. I’m just so lost

Joshua A GoodwinFebruary 7 2025 at 9:04 am

Accepted on January 22nd and today is February 7th. Nothing yet. Filed through HRBlock. According to the wheres-my-refund link, it still shows as accepted and waiting for approval.

ColleenFebruary 7 2025 at 9:38 am

Hi...this is not our first rodeo with taxes. Remember before direct deposit? Patients is a virtue.

Chelsey brookeFebruary 7 2025 at 1:01 pm

Come on IRS I need a car BAD I have got to get back to work.

Dana MFebruary 8 2025 at 3:40 am

This is the government. Nothing surprises me. When you owe the money they wanted immediately. When they owe you money, they will drag their feet. I find it completely ridiculous that people with dependence and children that get the Urgent income credit have to wait longer for their refund And someone who is single with no children gets their refund immediately. I would think families with children that are waiting on their refund would be their priority seeing as we have mouths to feed and bills to catch up on because they take a good chunk of our money throughout the year. But again this is the government they do not care about anybody as long as they get their money when it’s due.

KarenFebruary 8 2025 at 4:23 am

Posted Jan 17. They accepted it. And now nothing. We filed E-file with IRS. . What is going on.

Gary FurnessFebruary 8 2025 at 6:44 am

Mine was accepted on January 27 and I'm still waiting for my refund, but I kinda need it to get here already so I can get a decent car to drive myself back and fourth to work and quit paying $200.00 a month out in gas. And my state was taken for non payment for either city or school taxes but I pay city & school taxes every week when they take it from my check.

Samantha LaneFebruary 8 2025 at 10:19 am

I filed via HR Block on 1/27, & they were accepted the same day. I have a DD date for 2/12. No PATH, but I had my fees deducted from my refund. Does anyone know if the bank they use will hold the refund till the day of, or will they release it once they receive it and take their fee?

Tiffany Michelle VeiglFebruary 8 2025 at 11:51 am

Last year H&R Block told me that my federal was approved and I was waiting for them to send me my refund. Irs.gov app kept saying it hadn’t even been processed! Finally In March I got a letter saying I had to verify my identity on id.me. I finally received them March 27th. I always file before Jan 31st! This year H&R says both state and federal accepted, I received state Jan. 28th of course H & R took that for tax fees! Federal says Refund pending (has info about path act) but everytime I check irs it just says received! I also have an account on irs and last I checked it says it hasn’t processed my 2024 return. I’ve tried to look up where H & R Block gets its info and I couldn’t find any information. I did read that Turbo tax does not get their info from irs on returns that they go by the day you file and when it should be accepted, approved, and refunded(in 21 days). Idk if that true but just putting in out there! I also read irs does not get any 3rd party info on your return so How the heck does any tax software get the info? If anyone has any info (i.tiffany26@yahoo.com) email me please!

JhamiaFebruary 8 2025 at 3:27 pm

I came to see what others are talking about regarding our taxes smh come on now my ppl... have some patience we are dealing with the crooked system here! You guys comments are the reason I'm gonna sit back and chill! Oh and yes I need mines hella badly too:)

JubabyFebruary 10 2025 at 7:11 am

To find out more about your refund you need to create an account on irs.gov and look at your transcripts on your return.

Rose n tnFebruary 10 2025 at 1:45 pm

I filed Jan 27 h&r block, efile accepted, but if I have that tax credit can I do direct deposit? The taxes already filed, how to update to get directly in bank?

Jessica DarbyFebruary 11 2025 at 7:16 am

Hey Tabitha...I've got a hurdle and was wondering if you'd care to share your experience. I recieved no stimulus and paid taxes on seven months of unemployment during my layoff. I've already efiled 2024. I did not do my taxes 21, 22, 23. Ugh

Gm I file with my daughter on January 28 I still don't get no money ,I don't know what happens

Wendy SFebruary 11 2025 at 10:54 am

Did any of you read the article? It clearly states, that if you have dependents, and claimed the Child Tax Credit, or the Earned Income Credit (which, most likely you claimed, unless you make tons of money),then THEY ARE NOT PROCESSING YOUR RETURN UNTIL AFTER FEBRUARY 15TH. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU FILED JANUARY 1ST, OR FEBRUARY 1ST. IF YOU CLAIMED THESE CREDITS (which usually always equal fairly large refunds) YOU ARE NOT GETTING A DAMN PENNY UNTIL AFTER THE 15TH. THERE IS A LAW CALLED THE PATH ACT. IT WAS SET IN PLACE TO PROTECT US FROM TAX FRAUD. So if you actually read the article, you wouldn't have to waste your time complaining in the comments, and asking questions that you should already know the answer to. This isn't the first year for the Path act. It's been like this for a few years now.

Hey guys, I'm the owner of TNT Process, LLC, a small tax firm in Atlanta, GA.. We specialize in Getting Answers, Solving Problems, and Putting Your Refund in Your Hands—Faster! We see a lot of frustration here, and rightfully so. Tax season should be about getting your hard-earned money back, not playing the IRS waiting game. So let’s break it down: 1. EIC & CTC Delays – Yes, the IRS legally holds refunds with Earned Income Credit (EIC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) until mid-February due to the PATH Act. This was implemented to prevent fraud, but unfortunately, it slows things down even for those who qualify legitimately. 2. Accepted vs. Processed – Just because your return was accepted early (even as early as Jan. 17) doesn’t mean it was processed yet. The IRS officially started processing on Jan. 27 and many refunds are still in the "received" stage. 3. State Refunds – If you haven’t received your state refund in years (looking at you, Stacey Gordon), something is definitely off. We can investigate and help you get what's owed. 4. Past Returns & Extensions – Yes, Araceli, you can still file your 2021 taxes. No extension is needed, but if you were due a refund, act fast—refunds expire after three years! 5. Dependent Claims & Adjustments – Rylee, claiming a non-child dependent can add a credit, but it's not the same as EIC. And Wendy, a 17-year-old high school student is too old for EIC, but we can check if you qualify for other credits. 6. Unexpectedly Low Refunds – Michael, if your usual refund dropped to $40, there could be issues with tax law changes, income, withholdings, or offsets (debt collections). Let’s take a closer look before you give up on filing. TNT Process, LLC Can Help You Avoid the IRS Waiting Game Tired of waiting? Need cash now? We offer tax refund advances of up to $1,000 with NO finance fees and can approve up to $7,000—so you don’t have to wait for the IRS or state. Fun fact: Did you know the IRS issues over 90% of refunds within 21 days—but the other 10% can get caught in manual reviews, identity verifications, and system errors? Don't let your money get stuck. TNT Process, LLC has the experience and resources to get answers, fix issues, and get your refund moving. Email us today to get started, or to simply ask us how we can help you.. Let’s make tax season easier! Emailus@thetntprocess.com

If you have an IRS account, log in to your account and under your 2024 tax information, you can click on your 2024 transcript. It should show your IRS Processing Date in the transcript. Whatever date shown on your transcript is the date IRS is supposed to complete processing your tax. Now I read an article about filing (eFile) "without EITC", it says refund will be released within 21 days from the date IRS accepted the return. I am assuming if you eFiled, the earliest acceptance date would be the 27th of Jan 2025 (the ealiest date the IRS will start accepting). And those who eFiled "with EITC, 22nd of Feb 2025 is when you will start seeing updates on your return and on the 3rd of March is when IRS will start releasing the refunds provided everything checks out. It takes longer if you paper file (through mail) whether with or without EITC.

Matthew HammettFebruary 13 2025 at 7:18 am

If I owe what is address to send to?

LizFebruary 13 2025 at 8:52 am

So much for the 5 day earlier refund.... I hope I get that $25 back now

Manny BFebruary 13 2025 at 11:59 am

Wendy S- Not everyone is in the same boat. My ex claimed one of our children on her taxes and got both credits because our oldest is 7. She got it in exactly 8 business days. So it really depends on who is auditing the taxes. Knowing the government if you are getting more than 2750 they are probably looking harder at it before just giving it away.

Rosalyn LFebruary 13 2025 at 6:47 pm

I got dependents but I filed on February the 3rd can you give me my 21 days from there

Tracy SFebruary 17 2025 at 12:49 pm

Wendy S…. No need to come on here all ignorantly expressing your negative views about others. We’re all adults and we can all clearly read the article! But it’s not correct and the government/irs is all over the place as always! My boyfriend and my best friend both filed a week before and a week after I did and they both received their refunds and they both claimed children. So instead of being rude and insulting lsome people and accusing them of not reading the article, why not just try to explain things kindly from YOUR point of view or experience. There’s enough evil and inconsiderate human in this world it’s not good to be one of them trying to sit on a high horse you yourself can also fall off of! You don’t know everything CLEARLY! and you don’t need to down anyone who has valid questions. I hope you have a better day then the one you had when you choose to come on here thinking it’s ok to talk to others as they are below you! Plus don’t you know you can’t always believe what you read?? I personally would rather go off of real people and the REAL experiences they have had!! That seems more legitimate than an article!

SaraFebruary 18 2025 at 8:07 am

Wendy s. Lol I was told I should get mine fed. 11th and and bc of the path act I knew it was wrong but it's now the 18th and still no updates. So how about instead of getting on here like some old lady that has nothing better to do then bitch at people on the internet u leave the posting to people that can actually answer questions in a real way or people that have real questions. This isn't ur blog or some shit this is for people who r truly looking for answers or who r here to actually help
