Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) users now have the option to receive emails from the IRS about their electronic tax payments. You can sign up for payment status emails by visiting eftps.gov/eftps.

EFTPS is the electronic funds transfer (EFT) system used by the Treasury Department to collect federal employment tax deposits (FTDs). Employers must make all FTDs by EFT. Payroll service bureaus make deposits via batch or bulk process — batch is the most common method.

With the new email feature, EFTPS users will be able to sign up to receive email notifications about their electronic tax payments — such as emails that confirm payment, remind the user that a payment is scheduled and inform the user that a payment was canceled, returned or modified. Users will also receive a confirmation about email address changes.

Users can opt in to receive email notifications when they enroll in EFTPS or when they update their EFTPS account. Those who choose to sign up for the email notifications can also cancel the notifications if they no longer wish to receive them.

Note: The IRS continues to remind taxpayers to watch out for fictitious emails from scammers attempting to imitate the government site. Taxpayers will only receive an email from EFTPS if they have requested the service.

Accelerated W-2s and 1099s in 2017

As you may know, the federal deadline is January 31 — and several states have been added to the list of accelerated returns. As a payroll provider, you need to keep your clients in compliance with increasingly accelerated filing deadlines for submitting their Form W-2s. The small windows of time are a consequence of the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, which was enacted in late 2015. This helps the tax authorities to not only better match the tax returns data, but also reduce identity theft and refund fraud. Below are the deadlines for W-2s and 1099s by state.
