The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has presented Sam McCall, PhD, CPA, CGMA, CGFM, CIA, CGAP, CIG, of Tallahassee, Fla., with the Institute’s 2016 Outstanding CPA in Government Career Contribution Award honoring his lifelong contribution to the profession.
The AICPA also has presented Paul Curtis, CPA, of Waldorf, Md., with the 2016 Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award at the federal level and Kristen Scalise, CPA, CFE, of Green, Ohio, with the 2016 Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award at the local level.
Tim Christen, CPA, CGMA, chair of the AICPA’s board of directors, presented the awards today at the Institute’s 32nd Annual National Governmental Accounting and Auditing Update Conference in Washington, D.C
“The 2016 winners of the Outstanding CPA in Government Awards are CPAs who have had a definitive, lasting and significant impact on our government, their colleagues and the public at large. They are three amazing individuals who have demonstrated a new standard of excellence for our profession and its work in government,” said Christen.
The Outstanding CPA in Government Career Contribution Award recognizes significant contributions to the CPA profession through government service at the local, state or federal level over a candidate’s career. Award winners must have demonstrated exceptional leadership, high ethical standards, and a track record of professional excellence. Over his 47-year career, McCall has distinguished himself through his work and the significant contributions he has made at the federal, state, and local government levels, including as city auditor for the city of Tallahassee for 13 years and as Florida Deputy Auditor General for 13 years. For the last five years, McCall also has been a member of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board that establishes GAAP for the federal government. He is currently the chief audit officer at Florida State University (FSU).
The Outstanding CPA in Government Impact Award recognizes the impact of recent significant contributions of CPAs to the efficiency, effectiveness or innovative service delivery of their respective local, state or federal employer organizations. Curtis, as the director of financial audits for the Office of Audit for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of the U.S. Inspector General since 2003, directs the annual audit of the EPA’s financial statements. The audits have resulted in improved business operations and identified tens of millions of dollars in savings. Scalise, the fiscal officer for Summit County in Ohio, has managed the county divisions of Auditor, Recorder and Treasurer since 2011. She has streamlined appraisal and tax collection processes and significantly increased collection of delinquent property taxes to provide more money for the use of local communities.
