The accounting profession tops the list of most underrated jobs, according to a new report by jobs search portal CareerCast.com. And while advertising account executives, public relations managers and senior corporate executives may have fast-paced, highly coveted careers, they rank among the most overrated jobs. Other highly sought-after jobs that made CareerCast’s overrated jobs list include event coordinator, attorney, author and surgeon.

Difficulty breaking in to the profession, high stress levels and poor prospects are among the reasons many of these jobs landed on the most overrated jobs list. For example, the projected hiring outlook for advertising account executives over the next eight years is -1%, and pay raises are often hard to come by. And while event coordinators are in demand and have a 33% hiring outlook, their jobs are high-stress and high-pressure.

Surgeons, who have the highest average salary at $233,150, spend years in medical school and have one of the most stressful jobs of all. And while self-publishing has helped many people realize their dream of becoming an author, dealing with rejection and making a good living as an author are often difficult.

Those seeking great opportunities with a high growth potential should consider CareerCast’s most underrated jobs, such as accounting, market research analyst, multimedia artist, environmental engineer and physiologist.

“Underrated jobs often share certain traits, such as high-growth potential, low stress and the opportunity to make a difference,” says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast. “While these jobs may not attract as much attention, they can be more fulfilling than a high-stress, high-profile career.”
