AICPA recognizes City of South Miami CFO as an outstanding CPA in government

The chief financial officer for the City of South Miami has been recognized by the American Institute of CPAs for his leadership in sound municipal financial management.

Alfredo Riverol, CPA, was presented the 2013 Outstanding Certified Public Accountant in Government Impact Award at the annual National Governmental Accounting and Auditing Conference on August 12, 2013 in Washington, DC.

The award recognizes the impact of significant contributions of a CPA to the efficiency, effectiveness, and innovative service delivered to their respective employer organization.

The AICPA represents the profession nationally regarding rule-making and standard-setting, and serves as an advocate before legislative bodies, public interest groups and other professional organizations.

The AICPA develops standards for audits of private companies and other services by CPAs; provides educational guidance materials to its members; develops and grades the Uniform CPA Examination; and monitors and enforces compliance with the profession’s technical and ethical standards.

Riverol is a highly conscientious public servant with a collaborative but fiscally responsible attitude in the use of public funds. He holds two Master Degrees; Master of Public Administration (2000) & a Master of Science in Taxation (2003) both from Florida International University (FIU) and is a lifetime member of the FIU Alumni Association. In addition to his CPA credential, Riverol is also a Certified Government Financial Manager, a Certified Global Management Accountant and a Certified Forensic Accountant.

In 2010, Riverol was selected as the Chief Financial Officer at the City of South Miami at a time when the City was in a state of financial uncertainty and in the process of an investigation by the IRS and SEC for the issuance of tax-exempt bonds in 2002 and 2006. Furthermore, the city’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) had 13 reported findings, of which four were considered material misstatements and significant. During Riverol’s three years tenure with the City, the IRS and SEC issues were both resolved and the City’s latest CAFR had zero findings; which was the first time in the city’s most recent history, which Alfredo played a key role.

He was recognized for his belief in government and his dedication to public service is admirable. His ethics and moral being stands to be a model for anyone who aspires to serve the public in a government position capacity and as a professional in the outstanding accounting field.

The award also noted his committement to community service. Riverol is a past president of the Kiwanis of North Miami Beach-Sunny Isles and received the Kiwanis International President’s Award. He is also a past member of the Kids And the Power of Work (KAPOW) program which helps teach young local students about work and the different careers.
