Executive Predictions for 2012, and The Year in Review 2011

Are the Mayans correct? Thoughtleaders in the profession offer their analysis of 2011, and predictions for 2012.

From the December 2011 Issue.

As with any other year, 2011 was one of triumph for some, defeat for others and a continuously evolving technological landscape. The economy, both domestic and global, continued to hobble along, but the innovative spirit was strong.

In the area of consumer technology, only a year after the debut of the Apple iPad, the new tablet market boomed, with emerging competition from Amazon, Sony, Toshiba and BlackBerry. For tax and accounting professionals, the trend toward the Cloud picked up steam, with increased interest in web-based professional and client-side applications.

Each December, we invite a few technology leaders to share their view of the significant events in the profession during 2011 from a business, technology and even personal perspective - and then to give us their expectations for the year, or years, to come. Here's what they have to say:

James C. Metzler -- Vice President - Small Firm Interests for the AICPA.

Shafat Qazi -- CEO and Founder, BQE Software.

Mike Sabbatis -- President & CEO, CCH, a Wolters Kluwer business.

Jon Baron -- President, Professional, Tax & Accounting, Thomson Reuters.
