Accounting and business solutions provider Sage has acquired Baton Rouge, LA-based Paperless Environments, a long-standing Sage partner and specialist provider of technology for accounts payable automation, document workflows, and subcontractor compliance in the construction industry.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

This is Atlanta-based Sage’s second construction-related M&A deal in the last two months. It acquired Bangert, a Sage partner and specialist in AI-enabled implementation and onboarding for construction financial management, in August.

Sage said Thursday that the acquisition of Paperless Environments continues its ongoing investment in its construction offering, giving contractors greater control over the information and approvals they need to keep projects on track.

Sage says it’s investing in automation and artificial intelligence to help construction businesses work more efficiently and gain a clearer view of their financial and operational performance. This gives them the information needed to act earlier, manage risk, and protect profitability, the company added. Sage Intacct Construction provides financial management and job costing, while Sage’s wider offering spans preconstruction, construction operations, payroll, and HR.

Paperless Environments brings more than two decades of construction experience, as well as AP automation, document management, and workflow capabilities that connect finance, project, and jobsite teams.

“Construction is an important market for Sage, and we have been deliberate about adding the technology and expertise our customers need,” Dan Miller, executive vice president of financials and ERP at Sage, said in a statement on Oct. 1. “Contractors should not have to piece together critical information from across their finance, project, and field teams. Paperless brings a highly experienced team with expertise in accounts payable automation and document workflows that will help reduce the manual work involved in managing invoices, project records, and compliance documents across offices and jobsites.”

Paperless Environments serves more than 1,400 customers across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Its technology integrates with both Sage and non-Sage enterprise resource planning systems, and existing customers and integrations will continue to be supported following the acquisition. Sage customers already access Paperless’s technology as Sage Paperless Construction, which works with Sage Intacct Construction, Sage 300 Construction, and Real Estate and Sage 100 Contractor.

Paperless helps contractors capture and route project records, validate invoice information against ERP data and purchasing requirements, and manage the documentation needed to maintain subcontractor compliance and keep payments moving. Mobile capabilities allow jobsite teams to submit receipts, images, and forms, while authorized project managers can review documents and approve work away from the office.

“Paperless’s team has developed its technology by working closely with construction businesses and understanding how their finance, project, and field teams operate,” Seth Dawson, president and CEO of Paperless Environments, said in a statement. “Joining Sage gives us the opportunity to bring that experience to more customers and play a bigger role in shaping the future of construction technology. We know the industry, we understand the pressures contractors face, and we share Sage’s commitment to delivering technology that makes a practical difference to their businesses.”
