Big Four firm KPMG introduced this week the Client Technology & Innovation group, which was formed to develop AI-native businesses and quickly scale new product offerings.
“Client expectations, capital flows, and technology are evolving quickly,” KPMG Chair and CEO Tim Walsh said in a statement on Sept. 22. “We have successfully integrated AI into how we serve our clients, but the pace of disruption requires us to think differently and make faster, bigger bets. CT&I pairs the agility required to innovate with the talent, technology platforms, data, and client relationships that differentiate KPMG.”
Todd Lohr will lead CT&I, effective Oct. 1, and the new organization will focus on “innovation at the edge” to experiment and incubate ideas faster and scale businesses.
CT&I brings together the firm’s technology ecosystem, including alliance partners, ventures investments in startups, and relationships with venture capital firms. As a result, the firm expects additional joint ventures across the ecosystem to accelerate the new businesses and co-development of new products with clients.

“Our focus is on building a portfolio of businesses that addresses our clients’ biggest challenges across technology disruption, trust and cybersecurity, business transformation and transactions,” Lohr, vice chair and head of CT&I, said in a statement. “We’ll be working like a startup at the edge to move faster without creating risk or sacrificing quality to our core business. Each edge company will have a mandate to build and scale with a variety of exit strategies, including folding them back into the core.”
CT&I will also serve as a key leadership development experience at KPMG with rising stars identified to participate in rotations as founders and leaders within the edge companies. It will provide an opportunity to build both leadership skills and AI and digital literacy that people can then bring into firm leadership roles, positioning them to lead as the professional services market evolves, the firm says.
With CT&I, KPMG will expand its efforts to co-develop products with technology partners, including startups, the frontier AI labs, and major alliances, including Anthropic, Google Cloud, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Databricks.
CT&I will work closely with its technology partners and the core businesses to build repeatable products on its client delivery platforms to create value for clients across industries and functions, KPMG says.
“Businesses need the most trusted and capable AI models, paired with deep industry expertise and the products people already use for their work. KPMG brings both,” Kate Jensen, head of Americas at Anthropic, developer of Claude AI, said in a statement. “Through our alliance with KPMG, Claude is built into Digital Gateway, the platform its teams and clients use every day to unlock new opportunities with AI. With its Client Technology & Innovation group, KPMG can test new ideas responsibly, move faster, and help clients build new AI-powered businesses.”
