State CPA Societies in Action is a series of articles spotlighting the varied educational, advocacy, networking and professional activities of the state CPA societies across the U.S.
The GWSCPA was founded in 1923, and currently serves as the CPA society for the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area. “The GWSCPA is unique among the state societies,” says Kari Bedell, Executive Director of GWSCPA. “Yes, we are smaller, just one metropolitan area, but that is what makes this such a vibrant community. Our members are truly peers and neighbors, networks develop very organically through participation, and our members play a very active role in our programming. There is a great deal of member ownership of this society.”

GWSCPA Mission
A strong accounting profession plays a critical role in a thriving economy and nation. We know there is strength in numbers: we achieve more together, propelling career success for finance & accounting professionals.’
Recent Growth and Plans for the Future
While overall membership numbers have remained relatively stable over the past decade, the Society has experienced meaningful growth in its programming and member engagement. This has been accomplished by expanding educational offerings with the addition of a steady calendar of in person conferences, providing members with more opportunities for professional development, networking, and connection across the profession.
GWSCPA’s Top Objectives for the Upcoming Year
One of GWSCPAs goals for the coming year is growing its level of engagement with students and young professionals, educating them on the significant changes that are ongoing in the profession and setting them up for success in their careers. The organization will continue to find ways to support and amplify the nonprofit sector, expanding its already strong presence within that community. Along those lines, GWSCPA is also working to ensure that niche expertise in areas like nonprofits and Federal contracting are more known to those outside the local area.
Long-Term Objectives?
“Longer term, we are thinking about our own organizational identity,” says Kari Bedell. “We are reimagining what it means to be a professional society, ensuring our role in our members’ lives remains relevant, meaningful, and valuable as the profession endlessly evolves.”
