Top 50 accounting firm Doeren Mayhew has made its sixth and seventh M&A deals in 2026 after acquiring Punta Gorda, FL-based CPA firm McMillan, Whiteman & Associates and Houston-based CPA firm Sowers & Co.

Financial terms of the deals weren’t disclosed. The transaction with MWA became official on June 30 and the deal with Sowers became effective on June 18, according to media releases issued by Doeren Mayhew this week.

Doeren Mayhew received an injection of outside capital in August 2024 by selling a stake to Audax Private Equity, which has fueled its M&A strategy. The firm acquired Alpharetta, GA-based Griffin Global Technologies in June; Parlade Schaefer Schortz CPAs in South Florida in May; Florida-based Berman Hopkins, an INSIDE Public Accounting top 300 firm, in March; 1RDG, a Rochester, NY-based advisory firm, in January; and Birmingham, AL-based CPA firm Dent Moses and its affiliate, Impact Technology Group, in February.

Doeren Mayhew says the addition of MWA strengthens its presence along Florida’s Gulf Coast, one of the state’s fastest-growing regions for privately held businesses and high-net-worth individuals.

The MWA team now operates out of their Punta Gorda office under the Doeren Mayhew brand name. The Troy, MI-based firm adds more than 15 professionals to its audit and tax practice, including firm leaders Ray Whiteman and Betsy McMillan, who are now principals with Doeren Mayhew.

“This acquisition represents another important step in our long-term Florida growth strategy, reflecting our focused approach to building a stronger, more connected presence across the state,” Chad Anschuetz, CEO of Doeren Mayhew Advisors, said in a statement. “We continue to see tremendous opportunity to grow alongside firms that share our commitment to technical excellence, exceptional client service, and long-term relationships. Betsy, Ray, and their talented team bring a strong reputation and deep relationships in the market that will further strengthen our presence along Florida’s southern Gulf Coast and expand the depth of expertise available to clients in the region.”

Founded in 1985, MWA has built its reputation around personalized service for closely held businesses, contractors, professional services firms, medical practices, homeowner and condominium associations, and high-net-worth individuals.

“As the accounting profession continues to evolve, we recognize the importance of aligning with a firm that offers the resources, innovation, and specialized expertise needed to support our clients for the long term,” Whiteman and McMillan said in a joint statement. “Joining Doeren Mayhew allows us to focus more of our time on client relationships while leveraging the firm’s operational support, technology, and expanded service offerings. We’re excited to provide our clients with access to a broader range of capabilities while continuing to serve them from the community where we’ve built our practice and be part of a firm that’s investing in the future of the profession.”

Jason Sowers founded his practice 20 years ago and has grown Sowers & Co. with the support of Erin Fowler, a firm shareholder. Together they focused on delivering tax, advisory, and accounting support for high-net-worth individuals and small and midsized businesses in the Houston area.

Both Sowers and Fowler joined Doeren Mayhew’s leadership group in principal roles. All Sowers & Co. employees have relocated to Doeren Mayhew’s Houston office.

“Our Houston office has gained strong momentum in the market over the past year, and Sowers & Co. aligns well with our continued strategic growth efforts. Jason and Erin have built a respected tax and accounting practice with strong technical expertise, including an emphasis on estate planning. Their back-office accounting services will also complement our firm nicely,” Chris Masters, Houston managing principal at Doeren Mayhew Advisors, said in a statement.

“We’re delighted to join Doeren Mayhew and bring added resources to our clients and employees,” Jason Sowers said in a statement. “Our goal was to find the right firm to help us evolve with the industry. Doeren Mayhew’s suite of services enables us to strengthen our client relationships, bring additional technical resources to the table, and further develop our team so they can continue to excel in their careers.”

Over the last 12 months, Doeren Mayhew has integrated five firms into its Houston office, bringing its local headcount to nearly 220 employees, a 58% increase since June 2025.
