A typo by the Department of Taxation and Finance resulted in more than 50,000 tax filers paying more in taxes or receiving smaller refunds, the Times Union reported.

The department said the reduced refunds for New York taxpayers were caused by a typo in a withholding table on tax forms. The error was discovered during the third week of February.

In a March notice, the department informed tax professionals about the typo affecting New York residents, specifically those married filing jointly or qualifying as a surviving spouse with an adjusted gross income ranging from $107,650 to $161,550.

Tax filers were told they could receive smaller refunds than expected or a bill for additional income taxes owed.

The Department of Taxation and Finance said it “discovered an error in the tax computation that affected a select number of returns” and added that “affected returns will be reprocessed automatically, and corrected notices, including any additional refund amounts, will be sent directly to affected taxpayers. No taxpayer action is necessary.”

The department said the issue affected about 52,000 people in the state—less than 1% of taxpayers expected to file this season.

Refunds have been issued, though some returns are still being processed.

About 6 million New Yorkers have filed their tax returns so far, with the remaining taxpayers expected to file in the next two weeks ahead of the April 15 deadline.
