WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration is introducing a streamlined process designed to make it faster and more convenient for people to request an original Social Security number or obtain a replacement card.
Under the updated system, applicants can now begin the process online by visiting the agency’s Social Security number and card webpage. The site asks users a series of questions to determine the appropriate method for completing their request and guides them through each step of the application.
After submitting an online application, some requests may be fully processed digitally. Others will prompt applicants to schedule an appointment at a local Social Security office or card center to complete identity verification and finalize paperwork.
Agency officials said beginning the process online typically shortens the length of in-office visits, part of a bigger effort to improve efficiency and reduce wait times at field offices nationwide.
The SSA has expanded appointment-based services, encouraging visitors to schedule ahead if an in-person visit is required. Walk-ins may still be accommodated in certain situations, but appointments are recommended to ensure quicker service.
To further streamline visits, the agency is promoting its Mobile Check-in Express feature. Visitors can scan a QR code posted at the entrance of participating offices, enable mobile notifications and receive an alert when it is their turn to be assisted.
Whether an application is completed entirely online or finalized in person, approved Social Security cards are generally mailed within 10 business days, according to the agency.
