BALTIMORE — A printing malfunction caused about 6,000 1099-G forms to end up at the wrong addresses, a notice posted by the Maryland comptroller’s office warned Tuesday.
The printing error was limited to the 1099-G forms, the comptroller’s office said. Marylanders who receive a form that is not theirs are advised to “destroy the document immediately.”
The malfunction was an internal issue and not caused by an external data breach, the office specified.
New copies will be on the way to their rightful addresses later this week, according to the agency, though the information is also available via the General Accounting Division’s website. Affected taxpayers also can expect to receive information on credit monitoring paid for by the comptroller’s office, it said.
Form 1099-G covers “certain government payments” like unemployment benefits, state or local tax credits or refunds and taxable grants and some other payments, according to the IRS.
“We sincerely apologize for not catching the error and for any distress this incident may cause the affected individuals. We will be altering our process in the future on printing jobs to ensure this type of incident does not ever happen again,” the notice said.
