KINGSTON, N.Y. — U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan said Tuesday that he has urged President-elect Donald Trump to include Democrats in upcoming Mar-a-Lago negotiations on eliminating a cap on a federal tax program.
Ryan, D-Gardiner, who represents the 18th Congressional District, said that the Trump request letter was part of his ongoing push to eliminate the cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction program.
“Yesterday, it was reported that New York Republican Representatives [Nick] LaLota, [Mike] Lawler, [Andrew] Garbarino and [Nicole] Malliotakis were invited to meet with Trump this weekend at Mar-a-Lago to discuss SALT,” Ryan’s office said. Mar-a-Lago is Trump’s private resort and club in Florida.
In November, Ryan and Congressman Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey called on Trump to immediately begin bipartisan negotiations, and “pledged to work in good-faith across party lines with any Republican willing to put combating the affordability crisis over partisan infighting.”
“While Trump’s 2017 tax bill put the SALT cap in place, the former and future President promised on the campaign trail to “get SALT back,” Ryan’s office said.
“Making life more affordable for my constituents is my top priority—and if President-elect Trump is serious about removing the SALT cap and ending double taxation, he’s going to need bipartisan support,” Ryan said in an announcement on Tuesday. “I’ll go to Mar-A-Lago myself if that’s what it takes. My fear, to be quite honest, is that Trump is going to put on this charade and then roll over House Republicans, just like he did in 2017.”
“Let’s get everyone to the table now—it’s time to remove the SALT cap once and for all,” Ryan said in a statement.
President Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act limited the SALT deduction to $10,000 per household.
Not a single Democrat in the House voted for the bill, Ryan said.
Since his time serving as Ulster County Executive, Ryan has fought to eliminate the SALT cap and restore the SALT deduction, his office said.
In February 2023, Ryan joined with colleagues to establish the bipartisan Congressional SALT Caucus for the 118th Congress.
Ryan is a co-sponsor of the SALT Deductibility Act and has repeatedly made it clear that he is a staunch champion for eliminating the SALT cap.
