According to the organization, in 1999, the University of Tübingen in German became the first college to offer Open Courseware (OCW), aka, free college course materials online. In 2002, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) started its Open Courseware website.

By 2013, more than 250 colleges and universities around the world offer more than 9,000 free courses online.

The infographic also includes details on how web-based courses have impacted education around the world, including effects on students and educators.
