Within my role at the firm, I am actively involved in recruiting, training, and mentorship of recent graduates and aspiring CPAs. My greatest career success will always be those I am able to help succeed in their own careers, no matter what success looks like for them.

What are you doing to make a difference in the profession, your community or the world?

In the end, I will judge my success – or lack thereof – against how much I was able to make a positive impact in the lives of others, whether in my firm, my profession, or my community. I am proud to have been involved in a variety of organizations that are making a difference including:

  • NC CPA Foundation: Providing Mentorship & Financial Assistance to Accounting Students
  • American Accounting Association: Two-Year Bridge Symposium
  • Junior Achievement: Career Speaker Series
  • Marion Zirkle Children’s Foundation: 20+ years involved with Operation Shoebox to provide Christmas gifts and necessities to children in need.

Current Professional Reading / Listening:

Terrible, Thanks for Asking

  • Last Meals on Mythical Kitchen

I recognize that neither of these are typical recommendations for professional development, but that’s why I had to list them! Both Podcasts help me stay grounded in the bigger picture of what it means to be alive, human, and part of a community. They focus on having conversations about heavy topics with people from all backgrounds, reminding me that neither my difficulties nor joys are unique to me.

It can get easy to get bogged down in this profession. In numbers, data, KPIs, metrics, tax code…

These podcasts help me to step back and stay focused not on benchmarks and bottom lines, but on the people around me and the positive I can make.
