Big changes are coming to tax refunds this year, and the news may come as an unexpected, positive surprise.
During a Dec. 11 briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Americans should expect an additional $1,000 in their next tax refunds, citing several policy changes for the increase.
Recent tax legislation imposed by President Donald Trump and enacted by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is at the heart of the increase, Leavitt said.
“Americans can expect another boost in their bank accounts in the months ahead,” she said, adding 2026 refunds are “projected to be the largest ever thanks to President Trump’s passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill.”
Contributing policy changes include a larger child tax credit, increased standard deductions and no tax on tips or overtime.

According to Leavitt, projected refunds are expected to grow by $91 billion with an additional $30 billion in tax relief from reduced tax withholdings in 2026, citing an analysis by Piper Sandler.
“It is only because of President Trump and Republican leadership that Americans will now pay no tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security,” Leavitt said.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also commented ahead of the briefing, telling reporters that working Americans could expect “very large refunds,” ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 per household.
Earlier this month, the White House echoed these projections on X, calling 2026 the “largest tax refund season in American history” and crediting the Working Family Tax Cuts for the increase.
With refunds projected to hit record levels, many Americans could see a meaningful difference in their bank accounts.
