I believe the future of the accounting profession for female leaders is limitless. We will continue to lead more organizations, hold more board seats, create more businesses, and develop solutions that will solve future business problems.
What advice would you give to women college students about preparing for a career in the accounting profession?
Think about what makes you uniquely you and try to blend that into your professional work as an accountant. For me, that was blending accounting with my love of film and tv. This combination led me to direct and produce an award-winning documentary (All the Queen’s Horses) and offer something important and impactful to the accounting profession. Find your niche and make your own splash in the world. Trust me, people will notice.
How would you advise accounting firms on how they can better attract, retain, and advance more women?
Lead with your ‘why’ and stop explaining the ‘what’. Only talking about ‘what’ accountants do is not interesting but when you explain our ‘why’ what naturally comes through is the important role accountants play in society. Our passions shine through, and this is what attracts students to our amazing profession.
What is your favorite professional mobile app, and why?
My mobile wallet. I’m not sure if this is a true app, but it helps me stay organized while traveling.
What do you like to do when you have time away from work?
I love, love, love working out. I play tennis, love HIIT workouts and run. Exercise allows me to destress, and I find that I am most creative after a great workout.
What are your favorite podcasts?
I don’t have a favorite, but what I’m listening to this week: Next Big Idea Club (allows me to read a book in 15 min), Cheat, Planet Money
