Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who has been appointed as an independent investigator in the issue, has broad ranging powers to indict, so the charges could range from direct involvement in election malfeasance, or for impeding the investigation or other related matters.
The charges were reportedly issued through a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., and have been sealed by a federal judge. The charges are expected to be released over the weekend or by Monday.
The CNN report cited multiple sources who had been briefed on the matter.
