From the 2017 reviews of W-2 and 1099 preparation systems.

MAG-FILER, from Spokane Computer is an on-premise W-2 and 1099 processing and filing solution that is suitable for accounting firms of any size. Installed on a desktop or network, the product does not offer online or mobile access.

MAG-FILER supports both paper and electronic filing for both W-2s and 1099s, and works as a stand-alone product, with no additional modules needed to run the application. A product demo can be downloaded directly from the vendor website.   Users have the option to enter data into MAG-FILER manually, or import payer and payee information from an Excel spreadsheet, a text file, or from QuickBooks. MAG-FILER offers SSN masking on 1099 forms, and a bulk TIN Matching capability helps to ensure accuracy, and notify users when additional information from vendors or employees is necessary.

Data entry screens are designed to mimic the original form so entering data is easily. Users can choose to process a single form, or process large volumes of forms in batches. The product easily transfers data from previous years, so information does not need to be re-entered.

MAG-FILER will print on blank paper, as well as pre-printed forms.   MAG-FILER supports all 1099 forms, along with 1098, 1097, 3921, 3922, 5498, 8935, 1042-S, along with W-2 and W-2G for all 50 states, along with the District of Columbia. The product supports e-filing to both the IRS and SSA, and will e-file 1099’s under the IRS Combined Federal/State program. The product will also file corrected 1099’s, and will also e-file W-2 state information to state that currently accept the SSA EFW2format. Electronic form filing is easy, with users simply entering data in an information window which will prepare the files to be submitted electronically. Once the data has been reviewed and is ready, the program simply links to the appropriate website to begin the file upload process.

A PDF printer is included in MAG-FILER, so users can print all forms and reports directly to the PDF printer as needed. A processing service is also available that will input data, print and mail forms, and e-file forms to the appropriate agency.

While direct integration is not offered, data from third-party applications such as QuickBooks, Excel, and other applications can be imported directly into MAG-FILER.

A user manual is available from the MAG-FILER support page, which users can access online or download for printing. There are also a good number of product tutorials available that help new users with basic system navigation and functionality, and a Quick Start page provides system users with detailed instructions on how to file data and forms electronically with both the IRS and Social Security Administration. System users also have access to product support during regular business hours, with support available via telephone, email or fax. All product support is included in the price of the product.

Summary & System Pricing

MAG-FILER from Spokane Computer is a W-2 and 1099 processing and filing product that is suitable for business owners and professional accountants alike. A downloadable version of the product is available directly from the website for $334.00, or users can opt to purchase a USB Flash Drive version of the product, which costs $364.00. MAG-FILER always releases an early version of the product so users can begin to enter relevant detail, with the final version typically released in December of each year.
