Introduced in 2002, the back-to-school tax holiday was promoted as an opportunity for lower income families affected by tax hikes to buy school supplies and clothing for their children. It is held from 12:01 a.m. on Friday until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday on the first weekend of August.
Fortunately, the experts at Avalara have put together the "Retailer's Guide to Sales Tax Holidays in 2013," a comprehensive list of tax exempt items and dates across the country.
State sales tax collections will be dropped on select items such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, computers and other products in several states during upcoming sales tax holidays.
