The Sales Tax Institute has announced Cherie Julius as the recipient of the 2019 Sales Tax Nerd Award. The Sales Tax Nerd Award recognizes sales tax professionals who demonstrate a dedicated passion and commitment to the study and practice of sales tax.

The award does not solely weigh prior accolades or job titles, it also awards a professional for being a self-proclaimed “sales tax nerd” who loves working in the field.

A longstanding passion for the intersection of law and tax led Cherie to find a permanent professional home in state and local indirect tax. Today, she is a Senior Tax Manager at Uline Inc. and uses her expertise in tax compliance, research, and audit resolution to guide tax processes and grow the business.

Cherie’s impact as a sales tax pro spans well beyond her company. In 2015, she created the Indirect Tax Executive Forum to bring together tax pros in the Chicago-Milwaukee area to collaborate and share experiences about key sales tax issues. She also pays her sales tax expertise forward to her local community through her involvement on an area business alliance board and as board director of the local symphony association.

“In looking for our first Sales Tax Nerd Award winner, we wanted to recognize a sales tax professional that not only demonstrates their personal passion for working in the sales tax field, but one that embraces the concept of building a community of sales tax professionals,” said Diane Yetter, Founder of the Sales Tax Institute. “This award is a testament to Cherie’s initiative in starting the Indirect Tax Executive Forum and to paying it forward by creating a safe environment for corporate sales tax professionals to network and support each other.”

“I am so excited to be named the 2019 Sales Tax Nerd. You truly couldn’t have found a bigger nerd than me!” said Cherie. “All joking aside, I am quite honored to be recognized as a leader in this profession. It has been an absolute honor to be considered alongside the other finalists.”

Cherie will receive a scholarship to attend a Sales Tax Institute training of her choice to continue her sales tax education as well as a prize package full of sales tax nerd merchandise.

Finalists for the award represent a variety of backgrounds and roles in the profession. All demonstrate a ‘go-getter’ spirit and advocate to bring an increased focus on sales tax within their companies and the wider field of accounting.

The 2019 finalists include:

  • Kelly Brown, Tax Advisor, Yeo & Yeo CPAs & Business Consultants
  • Tonya Grayson, Senior Indirect Tax Manager, Technicolor
  • Jordan Perri, Tax Manager, Allyn International
  • Kenyatta Rogers, Tax Accountant, Gordon Food Service
